A smart phone is a phone that thinks it's a PDA (or a PDA that thinks it's a phone.

... In other words, it has a "proper" operating system on it. The key thing is that it then allows you write/buy/obtain programs for your phone that do things that non-smart phones can't do.
Smart phones tend to be bigger than non-smart phones and go through batteries faster too!
