This might be a handy tip to what seems to be a common problem...
When I'm dancing as a man with a beginner lady who is having difficulty with the hatchback, I suggest to her that she doesn't try to think about it - just to let her body follow where her hand goes. That way she always turns in the right direction. And as there's only one way a man can flick her, it works with beginner men, too!
As far as which way a man turns - he should let the momentum of the flick let his body turn away.
It seems to work for me, anyway.
