Heh, I get similar reactions without the shoes. Solution: reassurance that yes, they can dance with me, that I love to dance, especially with beginners, etc, etc. Beginner nerves will latch onto any old excuse.
And yes, they'll probably discourage beginners from asking you. Compensate by asking more beginners to dance.
