Can't say I have noticed that... I try to teach a distinctive lead between the return and the travelling return, so maybe that helps.
A lot of women have difficulties turning (or spinning) on the spot though, and this is something I end up spending a lot of time at Beginners workshops (and the occasional class when I notice many people struggling).

The basic rules I tend to dish out are:

1- the man is always right! (even when he is wrong, he is right to be wrong, indeed he is creative!)

2- As a result of rule 1, men are responsible for everything that happens on the dance floor, no use blaming your partner guys.

3- All turns / spins should happen on the spot. If you want to end up somewhere different from where you started, travel first (ie take a step or 2) and then spin / turn.

There are more rules / pearls of wisdom, but those are the most common ones!
