As far as I know, the formal spelling is chaine' (accent on the e). Once I had a look on the web, what it means isn't as well defined as I thought. Here's one definition which is close to what I mean by it:

I always thought it was specifically a sequence of half-turn pivots that travel in a straight line, but it seems a bit more vague than that.
