There's also a shoulderdrop style exit from the same place. There's another exit where you don't block elbow-to-elbow, but instead put the girl into either a turn or a free-spin.

on usenet, some guy called Franck suggested that Ceroc deliberately added signals to a lot of beginner moves to make the dance easier to get started with.

The yoyo is a very good move for turning linear momentum into turning momentum (ie walking in a straight line, and then turning on the spot.) It is not just the lead on count 3 that gives the lady turning momentum, but the steps in on 2.

A gentle lead to turn on 3 doesn't make much difference - she still has this momentum (of course a strong lead is just going to make matters worse.) All this would be ok if the man then stopped her. They usually leave it too late.

The obvious hint here is that I can control the initial momentum of my partner by changing the amount my partner steps in - if necessary taking a bigger step in myself. A timely reminder. I wonder though - how early should the lead to stop on 4 be placed? Thoughts?
