I waited over a year to buy my first pair of dance shoes. But, back in those days fewer people wore them, even the experienced dancers. Nowadays I think they should be issued to all beginners. When Sue decided to start dancing I took her out and bought her a pair of shoes before her first lesson - I wanted to increase the chances that she enjoyed it (I'm always thinking about a woman's pleasure )

Its a case of looking after your feet (pretty important when you are dancing!). OK, maybe people should wait a few weeks at the start to make sure that dancing is something they really enjoy and are going to stick with it, but its like buying trainers for going to the gym or boots for going hillwalking. (Well, that's for reason for the first pair, then you need to match them with different outfits...)

Actually, now you mention it; I've got several pairs of mountaineering and rock boots... And just two pairs of dance shoes! Now, how often do I dance...? Twice per week?? And when did I last go hillwalking...? April!!!

I NEED MORE DANCE SHOES!!! Finally got a good excuse to spend more money on dance gear!!

Happy Monkey

PS - now you all have to come and buy my pottery, so I get the money to buy more shoes!!

Re: Are black and white shoes scary???

I wear B&W's. Why?

1) They were half price when I bought them five years ago (as a relative beginner in those days)

2) They were the only ones in stock, in my size, at the dance weekend they were being sold at, and I needed some dance shoes

3) They are so comfortable, that I can dance the all nighters and Rockbottoms/Camber without a single blister

So, regardless of what others think of them, I will continue to wear them!

Re: Are black and white shoes scary???

Although my dance shoes are not black and white they do have leather bottoms and are great to dance in which is why i bought them! I also managed to wreck two pairs of boots in 4 weeks therefore worth it to invest in a proper pair!

To change the perspective a little.

Not long after I first started, I bought my first pair of dances shoes (yes, B&W's). Then my 2nd. Then all of a sudden, I had 8 different pairs.

And now, I dance in my £6 trainers from Tesco. And on anything other than the most sticky floors, find that they do me just fine...

Re: Are black and white shoes scary???

The thing I have with Spats (Black n White Brogues) is they just do not go well with the Ceroc uniform.

If you are a swing dancer and if you think about authentic looking 40's-ish clothing for dancing in then Spats look the Dogs and go for it cos you'll look great!

If on the other hand you are wearing Ceroc uniform (ermmm modern casual trousers and black or white T shirt - you ALL know that look) I just dont think it works!

Now I have a pair of black n white dance sneakers that (being a tart I hope highlight my feet should they suddenly go and do somat interesting (which probably never happens)) but they are a casual shoe as I wear casual clobber.

Am I being over sensitive? I dunno maybe yes on that front but Spats bring up images of gangsters and pimps in New York and if you ain't got the Zoot Suit y'surely don't need the shoes.

One will however admit leather soled shoes do seem easier to move over the dance floor and spin in.
