Are black and white shoes scary???

Hi!

Don't know if anyone else get this reaction from beginners.... I always wear my black and white jive shoes when dancing, and apparently this puts beginners off asking me for a dance. I have several times asked beginners up for a dance, and been told things like "Oh, you must be really good, 'cus you've got proper dance shoes!" or: "Oh no, you'll be a pro, I can't dance with you, you've got those 'special' dance shoes!"

Or maybe they just use my shoes as an excuse for not dancing with me? Am I really that scarey?? (Don't answer that.....)

Re: Are black and white shoes scary???

I think Black and White shoes make your footwork look good. That's all. They'd be the same shoes, and just as good to dance in if they were painted the same colour as the dance floor. But you wouldn't be able to see the dancers footwork so easily.

So, as far as I'm concerned wearing a pair of B&Ws says you want people to notice your footwork - that's it. Any other meaning is inside other people's heads - they're just shoes, nothing more

Personally I prefer a pair of 'Heavenly' shoes

They certainly get noticed as they are unique and pretty special you would only invest in a pair if you have been dancing a while and therefore possibly be a good dancer

(check out Tigger Babe's footware not sure but I think there is a thread about them, with photos )

you obviously haven't haven't seen the new " movey shoes".. they come in three modes: viktor mode , where the shoes will automatically move your feet , transforming the wearer into a slick ,sophisicated dancer, roger mode where they automatically move to a cuban or west coast swing rhythm, or nigel mode where they keep your feet fairly stationary, but make your bum wiggle.....these new shoes have been tested on mj dancers around the country with varying results; 1 fatality and 2 serious injuries where one pair got stuck between modes and the dancer looked like animal from seseame st. on speed!!!!

Heh, I get similar reactions without the shoes. Solution: reassurance that yes, they can dance with me, that I love to dance, especially with beginners, etc, etc. Beginner nerves will latch onto any old excuse.
And yes, they'll probably discourage beginners from asking you. Compensate by asking more beginners to dance.

The B&W dance shoes did put me off asking when I was a beginner and way into the intermediate stage. They are still on the negative side of the scales, in a very minor way.

I had my first feeling of.... we were all beginners once...... I was dancing with a gentleman who had it had only been his first dance and instead of just following through the moves i waited for him to do what he had to do...ie spin me... he thought this was a great help... I beemed! Its nice to not feel like such a newbie anymore and to help beginners! (feel the love)

And would beginners know of any other meaning or association anyway? I would have just thought they were snazzy shoes when I started.

(Though I remember several people thinking I knew what I was doing in the first few lessons I went to because they thought I was wearing 'proper dance shoes' - when they were just shoes from Next I had had for years! )

I'd forgotten about how much I was intimidated by thge B&Ws when I first started. As said they were always the reserve of the advanced dancers. THEN, from '99 onward Blochs came out and all the superstars started wearing them .... then all the teachers started wearing them. It used to be a good way of sussing out who was an experienced dancer .. just look for the Blochs .... Now, EVERBODY wears them ... even if they've only been dancing a few months. Dont really know why .. I found them quite hard to dance in to begin with and they still catch me out of I get off balance.

As for B&Ws ... they seem to be more and more the refuge of the Lindy Hopper. I wonder what the status symbol of the advanced dancer is these days? The ULTIMATE symbol is still A HAT! See Messr Nigel and a few others of the Elite on the London circuit ..... not sure if a bandana counts though LL?
