hi folks, was wondering if you could give me an insight to the classes. I use to do disco dancing when i was younger and i am now considering on taking dancing once again. What kind of dancing is taught and what are the competitions like? i dont have a dance partner either, can this be sorted at classes?

It would help if we know the area you live and your gender would help

Why are people so afraid of adding such basic details

Welcome!!
Don't worry about not having a partner, a lot of people come for the first time on their own. You get moved on quite frequently too during the classes, so you get the chance to dance with a wide range of abilities. A normal evening starts with a 45 minute beginners class where you need have no previous experience. Then you'll normally get 15 mins of freestyle (this is where the lights go down, the music plays and you find a partner to dance with! ). Then after that the lights come back on and there is an intermediate class (suggested to join after 8wks of beginners) - during this time, many venues hold a beginners review class where the beginners lesson is repeated, giving you a chance to ask any questions.

Most venues also have "taxi dancers" on duty - they are there to help and dance with only the beginners for the majority of the night.

How did you hear about it? Have you checked out the main Ceroc website for local venues? Where are you based?

Check out other threads on the forum too as you will probably find lots of useful information on them (and some not so useful ).

Re: Newbie here

Welcome Leecea! Ceroc is a fun dance, you don't need a partner and it's not all about competitions, so as a beginner all you have to worry about is following the moves and having fun!

I'm sure one of the Aberdeen folks will appear soon to tell you all about the various Ceroc options in Aberdeen – though I think there are classes on Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday.

Give it a try and I'm sure you'll love it!

sorry if it came over a little harsh, but we have had this conversation so many times and it (so you can see) annoys me a little - I really don't see why people need to hide their location and gender - what does it achieve

BTW where do you hale from murphy (I assume you are male)

Folks above have given some idea, but i'm sure that if you search this forum you may find other people asking similar questions. Have a look at Ducasi's thread and it should give you a rough idea of what to expect.

You shouldn't have any trouble picking up the beat then It's a partner dance (in that you dance with someone, not that you need to take allong a partner) where the lead (usually the man) leads the follower (usually the lady) into moves and spins and stuff. It can be compared to rock & roll, salsa, ballroom, or any other partner dance; most of them have (fairly) strict rules that define the dance... Ceroc tends to keep these rules simple and flexable so that you can dance within the first night.
Oh yea - the music is anything from swing to pop to rock to jazz to indie... you can dance Ceroc to anything.

Quote:

Nope - partner not required, the whole 'ethos' of Ceroc is based arround anyone asking anyone else to dance and no-one refusing (There are exceptions of course... covered in great detail within this forum if you have time to spare)

Tuesday night is in Culter Mills Club, Peterculter
Wednesday night is in Jumping Jacks, off Union St.
Thursday nights is now in The Station Hotel, opposite the station {duh }

Hope to see you soon.

Now Minnie...

Come and be hugged. Feel the love....

Some people don't choose to hide it, but they choose not to reveal it either. YET. Leecea is a newbie who knows nothing about Ceroc. She may have just stumbled across the site and thought I'll try that. The fact that she signed up to the forum to ask the Q deserves kudos.

And anyway... none of us were ever newbies, asked dumb questions, asked question already covered, made forum ettiquette blunders...

smile.

Your humble CJ

Hi

New to Ceroc, new to dancing but really looking forward to giving it a go. Thought I would try the Rutherglen Town Hall on Thursday - big worry - what do you wear (I'm a girl!). Does Ceroc resemble the dancing I used to do with my dad if so - wow please tell me where I can get more information. Look forward to hearing from anyone in the Glasgow area.

Re: Newbie here

Hi, Valt.

And welcome.

On a first night, wear something practical for dancing. A sparkly bikini and high heels should be ok. But that's just what the boys wear...

Seriously, not too warm or restrictive. And a smile.

That's it!!

Enjoy. Ceroc is kinda like Jive for dummies. NOOOOOO footwork, and really easy to learn moves. Have a peak in the beginners' section.

Do say hi to Mairi, the teacher, and the taxi dancers: they'd be delighted to chat. Oh, and have a dance too...

Hi Valt, welcome to the forum!

Rutherglen is a great place to start Ceroc – great venue, teacher and helpers. And lots of friendly dancers too!

Don't worry about what to wear – anything that's comfortable, though for spins, you'll want to be wearing slippy-soled shoes, but not too high a heel!

Anything else you need to know, you've come to the right place – just ask!

Also, as a girl, footwear is important, you need to wear something comfortable, that doesn't come off too easily, and you're not likely to break your neck in (no flip flops or platforms) and also, try to wear something that moves easily (not trainers, with rubber soles).
