How about starting with Brick Lane, as jivecat has to read it already for her offline book club (and I've just finished it!).

I'd suggest that as we get 'members' for the book club, then each month we have someone else suggest a different book?

Alternatively I'll start a poll with other suggestions if people would like - whaddaya think?

Re: Brick Lane - Monica Ali for July?

I'm in, no idea what it's about but I'll pop to a shope and procure a copy on the way home.

Think we ned to set a few paramaters before this all kicks off though - for example - who's going to be the bloke in the wheelchair that all the girls want to s**g??????????????

Perhaps that could rotate? (nice open innuendo door for ya there Chick )

Do we need to set some sort of date for commencement of discussions? (let's make some rules so I can ignore them again like the poll thing ha ha ha ha ha ha )

Re: Brick Lane - Monica Ali for July?

This sounds like a fine idea in fine company

I started a Book club with a friend in January and it has been such fun. Even reading and talking about the books has been fun

We have selected mainly books short-listed or prize-winning. This month's is "Budda da" by Anne Donovan. A perfect preparation for Perth!!

I already have a copy of Brick Lane (C/o WHS 2 for 3 offer) in my hot sticky!

Re: Brick Lane - Monica Ali for July?

I only finished it about three days ago but already I am going to go back and check for Shaky.....

I have this scary capacity to forget everything I have read...unless I re-read something in which it all comes flooding back within about 3 pages and I can't bear to go through the wait to get to the action.

Impatient? Moi?

Finished the book on Sat and was delighted to discover that NOT ONLY did it feature Shaky, but LULU put in an appearance as well - how cool is that?

Anyone else finished?

I've only just started

What's meant by a July book then? This is only the 12th July? I hate to say it but you've finished too soon

Yeah well...

I'd finished Brick Lane before we started the booky thingy, Olivia Joules is not exactly intellectually challenging and I read absurdly fast....what can I say? Besides I thought the thread was looking a bit lonely

I'm reading a completely far-fetched Patricia Cornwell at the moment...it's fabulous pulp fiction and I have been calling for the TV to be turned down...no down MORE! all evening so I could continue in the comfort of the living room *happy sigh*

Any plans for August yet so I go out and get - are you accepting suggestions or do we have a 'librarian' to issue titles to us...???

Re: July Books - Brick Lane and Olivia Joules

Well, there have been a couple of suggestions for how to select books for next month. I think the idea was that we would take turns to suggest books - that way no faffing about agreeing a shortlist. Then pick a selection of three or four from which people can pick one or two in a poll.

Ages ago I offered to do August, but maybe we should select the pickers in a fairer way. How about Emma puts names in a hat and draws for it?

Re: July Books - Brick Lane and Olivia Joules

I had assumed you'd bagsied August Divi - go for it!

And no Sylph, reading the last page of a book is a crime and I've only ever done it once when I was so irritated by the characters of a book I knew I wouldn't be able to finish it, but I wanted to know how it'd end!

I ended up reading most of rest of the book backwards in order to find out how the end had happened anyhow (somethig which I now constantly do with threads on the forum).
