Time For Peru To Change

More than 28 million Peruvians are being asked to synchronise their watches - to cure chronic problems of lateness.

The entire South American nation has been ordered to break with centuries of tradition by attempting to be on time.

At a specified time, Peruvians will all set their watches to the same time - with sirens and church bells being sounded to remind the forgetful.

The campaign has been called "Peru on time" - Peru: La hora sin demora.

"The goal is for citizens in general, not just public officials, to undergo a change in mental attitude to start fulfilling their obligations," said Jorge del Castillo, the head of the cabinet.

Peruvians have become known for their tardiness, with many routinely arriving more than an hour late for appointments.

People arriving on time for dinner at restaurants may find they have to wait anyway.

Many ask guests to arrive at "English Time" - which in theory means the arranged time. But even this is used to limit lateness.

Huh, only an hour or two late? They should try African time.

And of course there's Irish time - more pronounced in rural areas but also in urban areas. Not as much as an hour though - more like 15 mins or so.

after a few weeks when I was invited to meetings or social stuff I made a habit of asking, so is that 'Cameroonian time' or 'Real time' ?
Of course, they always answered: 'no, no, this one is real time, be on time' and then they always turned up... on Cameroonian time. Wonder why I was still asking after 3 months...
