Taking a mature Gap year out

Has anyone ever considered this ?

I’m not talking student gap years but when one has entered the mid life stage (30-60 or above)

Lots of reasons ‘why you cant’

Clearly if you have got 3 teenage children going through school more of a legimate reason ,rather then ‘will I get a job when I get back’, what about my house etc

Its certainly become more popular and it doesn’t just have to be travel you could teach in china or help clear forests in so

The company I work for allow you to take a year's sabbatical. This may be something you could ask about. Your job would be there when you got back that way

Just a thought. Doesn't hurt to ask.

Nina is the one to ask about taking a year out.
She has just done it, gave up everything to travel around the UK.

It takes alot of Courage to do.

You can certainly get places on overseas volunteer projects of various types. I discovered some by googling various key words. There are projects of various lengths and some explicitly say they welcome applications from mature people (and who can blame them).

Like teenage gap-year projects they cost up to £2000, though, for a couple of months. Seems a bit steep to me if all you really want to do is a bit of travelling. If you actually would like to give something back to disadvantaged communities etc etc then I'd go with VSO. But it's a serious commitment.

Sabbatical means every seven years. So the idea was you worked 6 years, then had the seventh year off (sometimes paid). Then you worked the next 6 years and off the 7th etc., Sometimes you were expected to do a bit of research on the year out.

I took a two year gap year in 1999 to New Zealand and Australia plus stop of places in between, and it was fantastic with no regrets, I just sold up,pack in the job. I could write a book on all the adventures I encounter, and the wonderful people I met and when I came back I worked in London for a couple of years, but I have been back in the midlands for a few years now but I must admit I am getting restless again, but I have been back to NZ since a couple of times.
