DNA testing - find out what's going to kill you

Just watching Pip Schofield on This Morning (I know...it's a week before pay day, otherwise I'd be retail therapying it like a woman possessed). They are talking about death this week (cheery) and there is a new test you can take, which looks at your DNA to find out what you are most likely to die from.

The thinking behind it is that what we die from is 50% DNA and 50% life style, so if you know what you are likely to die from you can do stuff to try and change it.

It can even tell you if you are likely to get Alzheimer's. You can't do much about that but at least you can get everything in order before your mind wonders off to wonderland.

It costs £850 for the test, advise and aftercare. Would you take it?

50% DNA and 50% lifestyle?

What about accidents and murderous monkeys?

Re: DNA testing - find out what's going to kill you

Nope - not only would I spend the whole time worrying about whether every little pain etc was the onset of whatever was going to kill me, I reckon it could cause problems getting life cover etc. Pretty sure when I got my mortgage one of the questions they asked was have you ever been genetically tested. Pretty sure I already know what is going to finish me off anyway (excluding any number 7 buses)

I think, if I was loaded and could afford to spend the money, I would have it done. If you look at it positively, you could prolong your life. I'm all for that.

Did you know the average ages for death in this country?

81 for women and 77 for men. If we all took the test and acted on the results, we could all live much longer.

i think the point is that you WON'T know even if you pay for this test, you are paying for a best guess based on current knowledge of DNA. i.e. a complete guess with a hint of lemon

NOpe - rather not know thanks... every twinge...."oh well, that's the start of it then"....

no thanks! Enjoy life - unless you believe in reincarnation (and that sounds like a lotterly... "Oh yes!, I always wanted to come back as a frog!") it's a one shot deal!

Re: DNA testing - find out what's going to kill you

nope i would not want to know either cause

1. you dont really know
2. you would spend the rest of your life trying to avoid something that you dont really know about
3. Live longer, live longer, who wants to live longer, i dont want to get to the point where walking is impossible, having somebody wipe my flower for me and worse still my back flower ,,.....eeerouuukk i would rather be dead.
4. £850, you can buy a lot of wine with that. !!

The thing about living longer, though, is that you don't get any more youth, you just get more old age.... If you could somehow slow down the aging process, so you could enjoy more of life while you're still young, strong and at the peak of your life, then yeah. But I've never quite seen the attraction of living as long as possible. Give me a guarantee that I'll be the fittest 70-80-90-100 year around, that I'll still be able to live a full life, and won't spend the last 20 years of my life in a nursing home, then maybe I'll reconsider. But as my granny said: 'If I end up in a nursing home, unable to take care of myself - please kill me'.

And apart from DNA and life style, I could get run down by a bus tomorrow, get shot, die in a plane crash or terrorist attack, fall down the stairs and break my neck, slip in the bath and drown............... Ooooh, the possibilities are endless!

Erm having had experience of working with the elderly, and while it's very rewarding, i would hate to be in some of their shoes! And exactly what LM said!

You are being too negative. You are assuming that old age means 'dead with a heart beat'. My uncle is nearly eighty. He goes dancing most nights with his (new) wife, pub quizzes, bingo, he travels all over the place.

What about your family? Even if you were old and knackered, wouldn't you want to be around as long as possible to see your children and grandchildren grow up?

Save yourself the £850 and take a look at what your parents or grandparents died of. You're likely to go the same way as one of them.
