Welsh Mothers...You gotta love em"""""""

OK me and the Trouble are doing meet the parents thing next weekend, down in sunny Wales.

So i have briefed her as how things will go..........God help her....

We will arrive and she will be given the good chair, the one with a table either side of it, (be afraid be very afraid), she will be sat down and supplied with a mug of tea, the size of a decent fishing lake.

When she takes a sip it will be instantly refilled to the brim.

Next come the Welsh mums sandwiches, two burly ex-miners will carry in a tray the size of a people carrier, with a mountain of sandwiches that Jabba The Hut would be frightened of.

When she takes a bite of one sandwich three more will instantly replace the bitten sandwich, after about 7 hours of nodding politely and agreeing with all my parents say,(as she will not understand a word of it), she will have consumed a couple of gallons of tea, (proper tea mind you, no tea bags here sweety), and about 3 metric tonnes of sandwiches.

At this point the sandwich pile is actually 4 times the size it was at the beginning, and my mum will say "are you not hungry petal, she has just eaten the entire foodstock of an African country and depleted most of the tea in China.

Next comes the Welsh Cakes, (bloody gorgeous), bear in mind now that she can hardly breathe, let alone move at this point in time, and my mum will expect a good noshing of the Welsh Cakes.

When this is all over a brisk walk up the hill will be called for.

Now a hill in Wales is a proper hill, not the mamby pamby slopes you get in England, so 12 miles of near vertical descent and ascent later she will be in the coronary ward of Prince Charles Hospital.

And finally when we leave in my suspension upgraded car we will be presented with a couple of corn beef pies, and a host of Welsh Cakes for the journey, for the journey, where does my mum think we are going to outer Mongolia on the back of a Camel.

Mothers you just gotta love em.

Whats your mother like?

Hopefully my in-laws will never read this, but your post did sound awfully familiar!

My best man is a living example that not all metabolisms are created equal: 6'3" and around 10 stone, even though he eats for a small nation. When he visited my in-laws, he distinguished himself by going for three extra helpings of food. My mother-in-law sings his praises to this day...

The Yiddisha mamma is pretty special too

Always remember to finish everything on your plate, flatter her with 'believable' compliments and admire her garden (or the furniture) and don't forget to notice the barmitzvah photo of her son

And remember, her lochshun soup (Jewish Penicilin) is the best you have ever tasted

Azande is the only man of mine that my mother has ever approved of. We're planning a trip down to Nottingham in November for her birthday and she has already rung me three times to ask when he wants to eat, how much she should have in the freezer and if he has any 'special requests' by which she means a mountain of puddings which she only ever makes for him....my favourites just don't get a look in any more!

As a fellow Welshman, I can confirm that none of this is made up. My mother is exactly the same! The only detail you forgot is that when everything has (by some miracle) been cleared from the groaning platter, she will ask, "Do you want some...." and name by turns every pleasant/edible thing in the house (plus maybe a few that she's forgotten she's run out of). The reply, "No thanks, I'm full" might as well be uttered in Swahili for all the notice she takes of it.

'My' mum seems to break all the usual conventions.

In fact, I can't remember her EVER baking a cake in my life.

If she was asked to 'make' one for a school function, she'd buy one and take great pleasure in skilfully giving it a home-made 'distressed' look, replacing all the tell tale wrapping with silver foil. Then she'd hand it to me, proudly announcing, (with a wink) that ours was sure to taste the best!

She's never been obsessed with feeding us goodies or making gallons of tea and would be the first one to suggest we have 'something from the fruit bowl' if we're hungry!

But, she's still the best mum in the world and I wouldn't change a single thing about her.

Best of luck to both of you!

Have to say that the over-feeding and watering must be a celtic trait... Beo's mum does it too. Cakes produced by the bucket-load, generous helpings of everything. Beo's Dad primed to cut back on the bad jokes... (at least Beo tells me it's inherited, am not so sure now ).

His mum asked me if I liked smoked salmon (which I do). She promptly produced an entire side of the stuff out of the freezer! Fortunately, it was absolutely delicious, so we did manage to polish most of it off

Beo gets off lightly... sadly my mum is no longer with us, so he's not going to get force-fed anything. However he does have my Dad to deal with... who is lovely if somewhat deaf and absent minded these days But he spoils me rotten and yes, I can be a bit of a Daddy's girl sometimes Beo's got a lot to live up to... but seems to be doing pretty well so far

Re: Welsh Mothers...You gotta love em"""""""

Funnily enough I had dinner with the ex-In Laws this evening (my husband's parents died young but he has two old spinster aunties who took on the job of feeding everyone to death) and I don't think I'll have to eat again for a fortnight.

Not only did I have to go through almost exactly the same scenario that DTS described above, but I also have them going on about how much they're praying and how many Holy candles they're lighting that me and the ex (we've been divorced for 3 years) will get back together!!!!! I don't have the heart to point out that it will be a cold day in Hell before that happens, so I just humour them.

Sounds very similar to Irish mothers. You can't leave until you are so stuffed you wadle back to your car and you have drank good strong tea. If you don't obliged and play along at being ravenous then they feel it. The logic goes... And if the girlfriend doesn't want to eat then how's she going to feed my son, he's going to starve, waste away the poor love....he will miss his mam then.

I think the Bridgit Jones's would be a good idea Trouble. Hope you both have a great time.

Hi Honey
What you want to do is bring a few big tins, like you used to do when you did baking at school , and fill them with your mam's cakes then bring them along to Breeze and you'll do very well all weekend.

I love her cooking!! She does experiment with different flavours, spices etc. When some of my mates come round for dinner they compliment my mum on the food!! I've suggested my mum should become a chef at an indian restrautent and she thinks im joking!! I don't think i've ever heard anyone complain about her cooking!!

My mum loves gardening and we always know that in the summer and spring the garden looks beautiful

My mum has 7 recipies...

You can tell what day it is, by what is for dinner.

Sausages means it is tuesday, fishfingers means it is wednesday.

Love her lots, she is not into baking, in fact the only time the oven is used is on a sunday - chicken on sundays...

Veggies remain the same all week, potatoes, overcooked carrots and cabbage.

Yum

When she comes to visit, she always likes my creations... thing is, she recons, as she worked full time and had 4 children, the important thing was to make sure we had food. This she did, even though it was simply seen as a practical thing she had to do.

It was good to meet you both. And, of course, I enjoyed dancing with Trouble, who really is a lovely dancer.

No bakestones this time, but judging by what Trouble said, I doubt either of you would have had room to eat any of them anyway!

Well, got back last night from lovely Wales and i must say its been one of the loveliest weekends i can remember (aside from dance weekends of course).

I'll let DTS update you on what happened but let me tell you this. Its all true. The welsh people, every single one of them were so kind and his family were so welcoming. There only joy in life appears to be making sure you fed, watered and happy. That was thier aim for the weekend, his mum his dad and his sister and her husband, even his aunt and uncle all baked us welsh cakes, corn beef pie (now that is gorgeous believe it or not) and i loved every single minute of it. Roll on the next visit.

i must say, great night dancing, great dancing with you and thank you so much for welcoming us and making sure we were looked after, introduced and made to feel so comfortable in a strange venue.

We look forward to seeing you again and i look forward to seeing some real action when i put you into a new position you didn't expect. Mind you, the reactions you gave me this time were brilliant. xxxxxxxx
