Election - policies that matter?

Well, it seems like the election won’t be just yet … but when it comes what are the issues that you want to see addressed, the issues upon which you will decide whom to vote for?

Re: Election - policies that matter?

it seems we have similar priorities

Incidentally, good on Gordon Brown for not calling an election - he doesn't need to until 2010 - why should he do it now just because the other parties want him to ? Mind you I'm more likely to vote Tory than Labour - much more left wing

Also am interested in Defence as an issue, separate from terrorism.

Based on how at least one person has voted, I think literacy and numeracy needs some attention...

Re: Election - policies that matter?

I haven't figured out how I would vote in this poll, but some of the issues listed have polar opposites in possible solutions.

So, for example, if I said that terrorism was a priority, you might think I would want an increase in the efforts in the "war on terrorism", when I actually see the reverse as a priority.

Likewise, I'd like to continue to encourage immigration to Scotland, and extra funds set aside for English-language and cultural education for immigrants.

Europe is important – I want closer links to Europe, with dual-currency considered. Larger retailers should be encouraged to accept Euros.

Green issues are important – I think we need greater investment in making nuclear power cleaner. There should be grants to help people install their own wind or solar power generators.

Tax should be made fairer and more transparent. The parallel system of income tax and national insurance should be combined, and more benefits could also become part of the system using tax credits and/or negative income tax.

Council tax should become a local income tax.

I think there needs to be greater emphasis on education and rehabilitation in our penal system.

Oh, and of the areas listed, In Scotland at these ones are controlled by the Scottish parliament, and so are non-issues for us in a UK general election...

Law and Order (mostly)
Housing
Education
Drugs
Transport
Green Issues (partly)
Health

Asparagus is the king!
Being a British Resident as opposed to Citizen I can't vote other than in local elections, hence my silly answers.

So what, local elections are open to more people than national ones?

It must be so.
I can vote who is on my local council and who represents me in Europe.
Together with all manner of referenda in Italy that I have no idea about.
