Frightening, infuriating, nauseating

Just been watching The battle for Haditha. Couldn't stick it out until the end.

If that's even remotely accurate as a portrayal of how the US forces dealt with the insurgency in Iraq, it's no wonder they've made little progress in 5 years.

Over the weekend I listened to Radio 4's documentary on the My Lai massacre in 1968, and the US Army's reluctance to come clean about the truth, more horrific and revolting even than was made public at the time. At the end, an American witness to the events said something like: "The American people have difficulty believing that the troops in Iraq can be guilty of the atrocities that are committed - that's because they don't know it's all happened before."

One can only hope that the US begins to learn the lessons that it has been being taught ever since 1945.
