Cold cures needed urgently!

I have this terrible cold at the moment - typical since I am on holiday from work! I need to be better for Saturday - any suggestions? Also has anyone else got this cold which includes hot and cold sweats, aching joints and a really bad sore throat? I want to know how long it lasts..........

Loving grated fresh ginger in hot spicy soup atm.

It may be too late for you this time round, but get hold of some Vicks 'First Defence'.

Viruses cannot easily be attacked directly because anything that disrupts the way viruses work is highly likely to disrupt the way the body's cells work.

First Defence 'slimes' the viruses with a gel that makes it impossible for them to attack the body's cells, a bit like putting a muzzle on a dog - it's perfectly healthy but it can't bite. The viruses are flushed out of the body, still coated in slime.

The only trouble is that the gel is only effective while the virus cell count is relatively low, so you have to take it at the first signs of a cold. After a while there are too many virus cells for the gel to do any good.

I've been using it for two years and haven't had a cold. Of course that's only anecdotal, so...

My experience is that it is effective.

I've only had a cold take hold when I haven't been taking it.

Unfortunately it is deeply vile stuff, and can irritate the nose.

So I think worth taking if it really important not to catch a cold, at a particular time.

Re: Cold cures needed urgently!

I had this when I was on holiday couple of months ago! I got ill on the monday night and felt marginally better on Thursday (well I wasn't wasting the dive trips booked) and Sat I was much better....

My point? Take lots of rest if possible!! Sleep def helped clear this up. Have also been recommended a dollop oh runny honey, some squeezed lemon juice (or the bottle stuff if you're weak) and hot water!

Hope you get better for Saturday

Re: Cold cures needed urgently!

This is absolutely a cold - one of the worst I have ever had! I was using First Defence but these germs got through! I've never had flu but this has felt pretty close. It is also virulent since all three people in close contact with it have got it. I haven't left the house for 3 days ! Must go out today to get more cold cures ! Still it could be worse - hopefully I won't get another before Southport.

At the first sign of a cold I shake about 10 drops of Echinacea Tincture into half an inch of cool previously boiled water in a cup.

Swig it down in one go. One go is enough, unless you think you need more another day.

I get mine from Holland and Barrett.

If you have some and it doesn't seem to be stopping your cold from developing have some more, and keep on till it does.

I buy Holland and Barratts own brand, it tastes fine. About £6 .70 for a bottle, but it goes a long way.

Don't buy the "Gold" type, this is a brown coloured tincture, and it tastes vile. Oddly it is more expensive too.

I think I will get some of this - I have had tablets before but you make this sound more effective. However, this is all too late for me now - I am at the coughing stage but otherwise ok - does anyone know if this means I am still able to infect others? I want to go dancing again sometime soon!

I've never tried the tablets.

Using the tincture once it's set in should relieve the symptoms a least a bit, but won't get rid of it once it's started.

BTW, once opened, keep the bottle in the fridge.

Hope you feel better soon EL

Well, about an hour after going to bed last night (fit and health), I woke up with one nostril completely blocked, the other one running and a bit of a sore throat so, I got up and found the Vicks 'First defence' I'd brought in readiness for this.

I couldn't have taken it any quicker...So lets see if it works....
I still feel a bit groggy but definitely not any worse

Hmm I know i've got some Echinacea somewhere, I'm off to find it now!

I really really don't want a cold any time in the next three weeks, it so doesn't fit in with any of my plans!

That reminds me....

Mental outlook is important for staving off a cold.

At the first sign of a cold, don't just accept the fact that you are getting one.

You have to tell it to go away, it's not wanted, convenient etc.

Don't be afraid to use the F off word.
