the auto-dialler is programmable and ignores numbers starting with a '1'.

I read this just after it was posted and gave the 18866 one a try.

It has been fantastic.

I looked up www.18866.com and signed up.

I did not bother with any sort of auto -dialler.

There is no join up cost, all you pay for is the cost of your calls.

You need to retain your bt 'phone line.

The cost for all national calls in britain is 1p connection charge, then no pence, i.e. free per minute ( any length of call any time of day or night ).

Basically all you do once signed up is dial 18866 before you dial the rest of your number.

There is then a recorded voice telling you exactly how much the call will cost you,e.g. to mobiles 3p per minute.

There are cheap international rates too.

Anyway my first 3 months bill the calls came to less than £3.00.
This quarter it looks like it will be about £4.

You can view your itemised call history on-line.

It does seem to be very hard to believe that it can be this good, I have no association with the company. It has saved me loads of cash, and is really worth considering.

I passed this over to an enterprising friend and he too is thrilled with the results - one draw back now .............

When he rings me I can't get him off the phone, he keeps telling me the call is only costing a penny so he can talk all night

On the downside,

You have to pay through the internet, No paper bills are issued. Which some people don't like.


Apart from that there is nothing I can fault.

Not very well, as Skype costs you 1.1p a minute (see here) . Also Skype works from your PC and a separate USB phone will cost you at least £30 (a nice headset is only £5 though). Its really not the same thing at all - 18866 is a box you plug your phone into, it works with ANY phone line though not just BT.

I did not bother buying a box, and just dial in 18866 before I make every call, as it seemed simpler.
