ID Cards: dead in the water?

The Register has an article describing how the Government's ID card scheme is now dead which will make some people here very happy. (I confess it's actually made my day, and I can postpone plans to emigrate.)

One less thing to rant about

But this has made my day too - excellent news. Let's just hope that no-one wastes our time and money by trying to resurrect 'em.

Re: ID Cards: dead in the water?

I looked through the debate we had on this one a year ago - good stuff.

Once the Home Office turned into the Not-fit-for-purpose-Office a month or so ago, it was clear that there wasn't a snowball's chance in hell of the government forcing through controversial Home Office legislation.

And all those politician rubbishing (literally) the LSE costing of £19 billion have now gone very very quiet...

I'm not so bothered about the idea of having ID cards in this country. The reasons why I'm happy that this has fallen on its face (fingers crossed) is the half-witted (and underhanded) way the government was going about it. A lot of lies, distortions and half-truths were (as ever) being used to describe the justification & plans in general - which had alarm bells ringing with a lot of people - and their plans for implementation were ... shoddy at best.

The whole exercise (in the form it was shaping up to have) was looking more and more like a ridiculous waste of time, money and resources.

IMHO

I don't. I just think that legally being required to carry a card about to prove who I say I am seems a bit annoying. The whole Big Database of Doom frightened me a bit too. The justification and deployment seemed flimsy and it worried me that if they can't even resonably justify why we need one then they might have had other purposes for it that they weren't publicly stating.

MYOB! If I have a mortgage - that's between me and the lender. If I have bills - that's between me and the service provider. It's not the government's job or within its jurisdiction to tell me who I am.

none government mandated, except for passport / driving licence but they are not needed and are not legally required as ID.

The concept of a well run and cheap to implement ID card system for the benefit of the population is not the worst thing the government could introduce, other countries manage quite well, but that concept is in the realms of science fiction in this country.

Those that have lived in countries where carrying of a photo ID is mandatory (even for ex-patriate residents) will, I am sure agree that crime & Terrorism, 2 of the main government reasons for adopting ID cards is no less likely to occur.

What real use are they anyway, now the culture of fear has found root in this country our civil liberties have eroded to the point where any Government agency can spy on us using the anti-terrorist mantra.

Never mind ID cards - if you want to get in a tizzy about the erosion of civil liberties, then look up the Civil Contingencies Act....

True. They could just skip the card thing and go straight to the microchip in the arm thing. Hell, I'm a dog anyway.

Yes. I dont see how it could be any benefit to us

The idea itself isnt so bad though, look at Sweden , a place I would consider living - they have ID cards in place.
