My ignore list. Is it possible to set things so that posts from ignored persons a) no longer show up for me as 'New Posts', and b) don't even appear for me in the threads (currently they show up as 'This message is hidden because x is on your ignore list')

Boo. Wonder if I can write some kind of client-side filter to accomplish the second part? I shall look into it...

It's better than nothing. It's just not as good as something better would be. Hint hint

In true David James fashion, I shall refer you to my last post on the 'What have you learned in the past 24 hours?' thread.

Nah, "true David James fashion" would be to ignore that question to feed his paranoia

P.S. I've moved this to be a specific thread.

Re: Ignore lists

I'm sure this has been asked before, but is there any way of setting things up so you can ignore a person's posts while still seeing threads started by them? Currently you lose the whole thread, including all the posts by other people.

Not that I know of (I don't know vBulletin software THAT well) but surely missing out the first post in a thread started by someone sort of leaves every other post out of context.

On my forum (PHPBB) If I hide, delete or otherwise make unviewable the first post in a thread or a particular user then all threads started by them are also unviewable.

I DARE say there could be something you could do with a little patch of the PHP code.. but it all depends on Franck's willingness to hack the code. personally if someone's on my ignore list I don't really care about a thread they've started ... So i don't think the change is worth the effort.

As I recall, Franck did tweak the ignore list function a while back, to ignore the threads created also - possibly as, err, a result of my complaining about them not working that way. Before that, I believe you saw the post if it was at the start of a thread.

So technically I guess it is tweakable.

But I also don't think it's a good idea - as Beo says, you need to know the context. If you don't know what the original post was, how can you understand, contribute, or keep on track?

(Yes, I know, but imagine even more chaos... )

Amazingly, I've got no-one on my ignore list at the moment. I feel all virtuous

I agree that you might not be able to. But in that case you can work out "OK, I need to see the original post" and take the person concerned off your ignore list temporarily. On t'other hand, it might be a thread you were interested in, but the OP is now posting unconscionable levels of tosh, so you just want to ignore him.

On the gripping hand, I would say the current behaviour is inconsistent with the behaviour described in the FAQ.

Of course, in practical terms, it's simple enough to use a mental ignore filter instead. But it doesn't reduce the blood pressure in quite the same way.

Easily fixed

To me, "ignore" means exactly that - i.e. you don't have any interest in anything that person says. And that, I think, should include any threads they create as well as any individual posts they make.

Which is fair enough. Basically, I checked the FAQ, and it said the behaviour was what I wanted, rather than what I was getting, so I asked here...

That's not what "ignore" should mean at all. The current mechanism is a blunt instrument which means I have to either ignore someone completely, or not at all.
But that's not the way we ignore people in real life, is it? Sometimes a person bores you, so you switch off for a bit. Sometimes their political views get your back up, so you switch off for a bit. And so on. It's not an either/or thing, is it?

Also, to ignore someone in a pub (that old analogy ), you have to be aware of them somehow. The way the Ignore function works here, it's like having invisible people around, who are also capable of talking to everyone else without you ever hearing what they say.

I'm one of the folk who preferred the old mechanism. There's very few people who I'd wish to completely ignore, but there are some folk who I'd like to ignore occasionally, and with the old mechanism that was easy. It was a helpful perception filter, as opposed to a clumsy perception block.

Rant over. Wonder how many folk read it.

Can you give positive rep to someone if you're on their ignore list?

Do they see your comments / who it's from?
