Valentines Day - BAH HUMBUG!!!

a holiday taken over by hallmark and other business to make money out of poor mugs by brow beating them into thinking that to be romantic they have to buy expensive flowers, chocolates, cards & meals on this one day of the year and that it excuses them from being complete gits the rest of the year

Re: afterglow's question - dunno if it still works, but the thread to post something anonymously to your the object of your affections is here. Alternatively, you could just, like, tell them? If you can't do that, then please at least make it amusing for the rest of us

It doesn't appear to allow "unregistered" posts currently. Perhaps on the day itself?

That would be good. I mean, I get fed up with the whole hype, but have fun messing about with it for a week or so. Then thank the FSM that it's over for another year...

EDIT: can you fix it Mr Moderator? - or does it need super (Franck) powers?

It's just a bit of fun and as long as you don't go remortgaging your home and lining the pockets of these heartless companies just to say I love you, it can stay that way. Just remember that a bigger, more expensive pressie doesn't mean more love (yes, I'm a tight-4rse and that's my excuse).

I've been told face to face that I have lovely eyes by people I'm dancing with and it hasn't ruined a dancing relationship. In fact, once was at Southport last weekend. Thanks again.

Re: St. Valentine's Day

after not having a vals card two years in a row i was really looking forward to last feb when i had a boyfriend and could do all the co-ey gooey stuff. However he doesnt "do" valentines so i was a bit gutted but thought ah well dont want to rock the boat

2 months later he suprises me with a trip to paris tres romantic! I was like wow this is great he doesnt even need reminded to do nice things.

This year i hadnt even noticed Vals day until jake came home from india and brought me two very special little gifts (yes ladies they come in small square boxes) and pronounced it was an early valentines gift. I then realised i dont need or even want it this year i am quite happy to go along with life and if we decide to do something for each other on any given day that day will be special because we care not cuz Hallmark says we have to.

Re: St. Valentine's Day

Personally I find Valentines day a pain. When I was single I hated it and when I wasn't I felt obliged to buy flowers and chocolates at twice the price.

top tip.. the week after V.Day go into ADSA or Tesco or any other supermarket and you can get all manner of guys/gals valentines day gifts for yourself for pennies Last year I bought myself several sets of cufflinks and a rather nice pen and pencil set for under a tenner Me? cheap? damn straight .. I'm Scottish !!

I know.....for Christmas...I'll tell my kids that santa is...I dunno...ill....dead... having a year off or sonething, but I'll get them some presents in January. Save myself a fortune by getting everything in the sale & Bob's your uncle.

Beo's point is sort-of like, if you're going to buy yourself a Christmas present, you might as well wait for the January sales. You'd still buy presents for other people before Christmas – if you have anyone to buy presents for.

So if you're single at Valentine's day, you can turn it into a bargain-hunting time after the 14th.

Aww.. it's not all it's cracked up to be.. the chocolate is over priced and poor quality and just makes you fat and get spots, Cards are just a piece of cardboard and flowers wilt. You need to find someone who will give you his heart ( not literally.. it could get messy )

Never really done much for it so i dont know myself, but i bet some prices, etc, are hiked up - couldnt you do the same for cheaper on another day, not have to book things way in advance - or alternatively do more for the same price? Not that i'm tight or anything
Ok, thanks for all the reassuring comments that people shouldn't expect anything on Valentine's day because spontaneous romance all year round is much better - but what about the non-singletons who wait all year round for the spontaneous acts of romance and don't get them? Are those people (not naming any names, of course) allowed to hope that Valentine's will be different, or are we (sorry, they) still to get scoffed at for falling for the Hallmark holiday?

Personally, I've never had a special Valentine's day, despite having been in relationships for 5 of the last 6 Februaries (including this one), for various reasons varying from poverty to distance to indifference - just for once, it would be nice to have one. So shoot me.
