Re: Geeks of the world unite!

I've been trained as a geek from birth so I find it difficult to distinguish geek traits from non-geek traits!

Geekisms in the early days... was able to name triceratops hip bone etc in latin age 6 (long since forgotten) owing to routine study trips to dinosaur section of museum.

Primary 7, first 'speech' to class on subject of water bears (an intriguing little character to be found in the field of freshwater microscopy) - others spoke about holidays and bikes etc.

Adult geekisms...I too have learned HTML, for pleasure not work.

I retain a large collection of scientific journals about my house for reference, just in case.

I spend train journeys looking for potentially contaminated land out the window.

Not sure anyone will be able to match this one though...

I have a collection of safety spectacles and goggles. Oh baby!

Re: Geeks of the world unite!

You know, compared to some of my friends I am a real geek, but you lot put me to shame.

Am I a geek?
  • I used to program in assembler on my Sinclair ZX Spectrum, and can still remember some of the op-codes. E.g. 205 is "call" (and is CD in hex – right?)
  • Since then I've moved through lots of programming languages, and my favoured hammer of choice is Perl.
  • I have MySQL, Apache, Mailman, postfix and dovecot set up on my Mac at home. (If you know what all these things are you must be a geek too!)
  • I have my mobile phone set up to access my email from anywhere in the world. I've also got a SSH client on it.
  • When I rewired my flat, I had cat-5 cable installed to all the rooms at the same time.
  • I'm a System Administrator – it's almost my job to be a geek.
  • I read slashdot
  • I understand the IMAP, SMTP, HTTP, POP3, and FTP protocols.
On the other hand...
  • I care about my appearance and like to wear what other people would call fashionable clothing.
  • Before this week I only owned one working computer (then I bought a laptop.)
  • Even though I've got all these cool features on my phone, I don't use them.
  • I don't carry techy things around with me – just the phone, and it was one of the smallest I could find.
  • I hate programming – boring!
  • I can't be bothered to learn CSS or SQL or lots of other things, since the invention of Google.
What do you think? On balance?
