Blog Entries: 2 Rep Power: 1 Rep.: 486 ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | Unblocking a closed port OK geeks. Im a bit stuck Norton decided to block port 433 on my pc (used for https) just before it went mental. I uninstalled Norton but the port remains closed. I installed zonealarm in the hope that it would realise it was closed and then allow me to reopen but it does'nt. made sure the HTTPS service is running. It is. No adware or viruses detected. Anyone any idea how to manually open the port. Cheers Geeks |

I wouldn't touch it with a long pointy stick, but I do have Norton 2007 if you want to buy an unused brand new copy That I acquired yesterday. But here we go.......... It isn't obvious from your question whether you are trying to access a remote https server (like your bank) or people are accessing a https server that you are operating on your own machine. If you are behind a router/firewall then I would suggest removing all firewall applications (like zone alarm) from the machine and then rebooting. Then open Internet Explorer, choose Tools, Internet Options, Connections and ensure that there are no proxies set for https traffic. Failing that you could be looking at a reinstallation of the TCP/IP stack Last edited by WittyBird; 15th-December-2006 at 06:42 PM. |

There are no firewalls on It's external https im trying to access Can get access in safe mode (so def not router) Tried with firefox and IE Re-installed re registered TCP and dll's Hit machine with an axe. Still no joy ![]() |

The fact that both Firefox and IE fail would indicate that the port is blocked by the OS, not an application. This is further supported by the fact that it works in Safe Mode. Therefore have to presume that there is an "uninvited guest" on the machine. Try stepping through the D.I.E.S.C.U.M process listed Here It is a list of tools and techniques for cleaning a machine Q: What is DIESCUM? A: The purpose of DIESCUM is to recommend a set of free tools and procedures that, in many cases, can disable, remove or prevent unwanted adware, spyware, viruses and trojans (collectively, "scumware"). The primary components of DIESCUM are the Cleanup Regimen and the Prevention Regimen. Hope that helps Last edited by WittyBird; 15th-December-2006 at 06:52 PM. |

Reason for asking is that 433 is NOT the secure port you are looking for, it should be 443. So if you are actually quoting the port then it'd not be surprising that you fail. ![]()

![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() I once spent 6 hours re-writing a bit of code because it didn't work. Two days later realised I typed heightObject(null) instead of height.object(null) thanks to powerbuilder only telling you you have a syntax error and givin you no clue where it is.

![]() But on a more serious note, have you tried installing Norton again, sorting the issue and then removing it? I know from the Mac version (which I never had installed on my lovely machine) that uninstalling indeed leaves legacy rules that weren't even setup while the thing was in working order. But on PCs it usually uninstalls relatively well. Thus I'd install it again and troubleshoot from there. Otherwise you may have to find yourself enabling and disabling various services to find which one causes you trouble. My guess would be one that starts with CC. But that is only a stab in the dark. That could be something like Cookie Cruncher????? I bet that Diescum would find anything that is on the machine. But if there have been various firewall products on the machine there is a good chance the network stack is knackered. If it was one of my machines I would be looking for a Windows disk right about now. The network stack is what connects you to the internet and is closely tied to the OS in Windows 95 and later. Therefore if you get a problem with it, it is very difficult to fix - and you usually end up wiping the machine I'm going out now - will leave you boys to argue amongst yourselves ![]()

But you are probably right that Diescum will pick up the culprit.

Though that probably won't be very effective if your enemy is using submarines to establish the blockade. |

Rep Power: 3 Rep.: 611 ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | Re: Unblocking a closed port The main reason for a block is you have not decanted properly Put the strainer on top of the glass jug and pour as though you were pouring into the decanter. Then fish out the pieces of broken cork as best you can. You will also find in the port a substance known as 'beeswing' , which is not in itself as harmful to the wine as the very much heavier crust at the bottom of the bottle. If you are using a strainer, the beeswing will be caught 'in it, but if you are not, decanting straight from bottle to decanter, it will do no great harm if a few pieces of beeswing get in. Both beeswing and crust are formed from living organisms in the port and seem to play an essential part in the development of this superb wine. Port is about the most difficult wine to decant properly and most worth the trouble. ![]()
