Microphone not working on laptop help!

Hi there everyone

Have recently installed skype on laptop but the inbuilt microphone on my laptop isn't working. I have tried changing volume etc and the webcam works but without sound. When I make test calls to Skype I can hear them but cannot hear my own recording.

Any advice???

P.S. If it helps i have a HP Pavilion Entertainment PC laptop dv2000

Does the microphone work with other applications?

There's something built into Windows called "Sound Recorder" - I have it in XP but I imagine it's part of other versions too. In my version of XP it's within
All Programs | Accessories | Entertainment.

If you open Sound Recorder, and set it to record, does the microphone work with it?

Thanx David but have tried it with other applications too and no luck..also tried re=setting up microphone but no joy..hence I am well and truly stumped..also tried the usual switch off and back on trick to no avail....

Ermm - I know it sounds stupid but when you run the "test" does the bar light up green at all ? If not its more than likely that something has "muted" your microphone - easy to fix . Assuming Windows XP, go to control panel, double click sounds and devices, click the audio tab and you should see in the middle your microphone. Click volume and make sure its set. you could also try advanced and click the "boost" option. Please note that some modems also have a "recording device" and sometimes that can be selected, so watch out for that.

Hi Caz,

a quick check but is there a microphone symbol next to the microphone pin holes on the top of the screen, a couple of inches away from the centre? Just had a quick read of the manual and internal microphones are only present on select models.

Also is there any sort of diagnostic disks that came with your computer? If so it should be able to check the hardware side of things. If all ok then it's down to finding if there's a software cause instead, try following Robin's advice.

OK guys thanx for all your help but none of this seems to want to work.. I am really puzzled cos it used to work when I got laptop as me and mate were messing about using speech recognition.... guess i will just keep trying stuff and if that fails i will have to pop into pc world and say "help"

Have purchased a couple of different mikes - but nothing !!

I can hear them but they can't hear me

I have given up now
