Help needed with UPS and server

I've got a bit of a problem with some IT issues at work which I need to sort out, only thing is I dont know anything about those sort of things

On Saturday the server went down and I was unable to restart it it was just dead to the world. It looks like it was actually the UPS that was at fault, as I bypassed it and plugged the server directly into the mains.

Not really sure that is safe so I suppose I need to get a new UPS (whatever they are)

I looked at this one in Maplins Maplin > 1300VA Management UPS Energy Protector

Would that be suitable? There is 5 pc's on the network if that helps
The old UPS s a APC Smart-UPS 700

I would be ever so grateful for some advice

Re: Help needed with UPS and server

APC make pretty decent UPS. Its not very often that they die.

Have you tried pressing the circuit breaker reset switch on the back?

If you have done that, it could be that the batteries need replacing as, like other rechargable batteries, they only have a certain lenght of life They are around £40-150.

One last thing you could try is a new power cable for it in case a fuse has gone in the plug. They are normally a Kettle plug type. You could nab one off a pc and use that to test.

Failing that and you need to get a new one, Would recommend getting another APC. APC Back-UPS RS 800VA USB/SER 6 Outlets With AVR & Surge Protection - Ebuyer

Re: Help needed with UPS and server

APS are very reliable, the most likely reason for a battery fail is an unreliable mains source

The last APS I had fail was replaced by them FOC So give them a ring first

If your business is dependant on your sever I would defiantly recommend another APC rather than Maplin

Uh I never thought it could have been the fuse

It was VERY hot in the office on Saturday where the server is kept, as someone had turned of the fan that normally runs to call all the electronic stuff down

Could the heat cause the fuse to blow? And ehm how do I change a fuse

Women Tsk. lol

Will prob be easier just to replace the entire plug and cable.

Whip one of an office pc that is not being used. It should be the same plug/cable as the APC uses.

It the APC powers up, you will know it is the plug.

UPS - Uninterruptable Power Supply. They are designed to keep devices running when the mains fails.
Read the instructions - there may be a thermal cutout tp prevent over-heating. There may be a button that you can press to reset it. If you do not have the instructions you may be able to find them online.
The one from Maplins is made by Trust who are a well established manufacturer of budget electronic devices..

but if the last UPS was not budget and she has the budget for non-budget i would certainly not go for budget.

Re: Help needed with UPS and server

Thanks for your help everyone

I have tried to reset it by the button on the back of the device which didnt work, neither did new batteries

I've bought a replacement UPS after some deliberation which is more expensive than the Maplin one I saw, but it's the same brand as the one I has APC and the model they brought out to replace our current one.
As everyone seems to be of the opinion one that the Maplin one was a "budget" choice, I didnt want to go with that over something as important as all our data.

Thanks everyone for your help, I dont know squat about IT so thanks for pointing me in the right direction

Re: Help needed with UPS and server

Another tip

Install the, auto shut down software, and connect the appropriate lead

I did not, we had a major power failure at the weekend, the sever drained the UPS Battery and crashed

It took all-day to sort it self out

And another tip - don’t connect a CTR monitor to the UPS
