Printer recommendation wanted

I was wondering if anyone has recently bought a printer that does a really good job of printing digital photos that they would recommend?

My 5 year old printer is in desperate need of replacing and I don't know where to start looking - there are so many. I think I need to get another inkjet but that's as far as I have got.
Well, I did go to Boots today but the cheapest they do is 29p per photo and I have over 300 photos I'd like to print from my last holiday - bit expensive

Any recommendations would be much appreciated

Linda

Re: Printer recommendation wanted

I have a Epson 950 very good but expensive

It’s a year old and so I gather it now belongs in the ark

But why bother printing

buy a laptop and show your friends your entire photo collection while you have a coco and go to bed

Re: Printer recommendation wanted

I would highly recommend canon printers (www.canon.co.uk). You can select a printer and they will send you a picture so you have an idea of the quality to expect.

They have just launched the PIXMA iP3000 and iP4000, which are both quality, cheap photo printers starting at about £80.

I have to say though for printing that amount of photos you would be better taking advantage of the 50 for £5 deals that Boots and other photo printers do. Printing them at home costs far more after accounting for paper, ink and printer costs.

Cheers
Steven

Re: Printer recommendation wanted

Yes indeedy. Printing from home is not the cheapest option, especially considering the learning curve as you figure out how to get your software to behave. So Stevens suggestion is a good one. If you really must have a printer though you could have this Epson C86 for £66.99. (good on ink as it has cartidges for each colour)This Canon IP1500 for £43 or this Epson C46ux for £38.

Cartridges are not cheap, but you can shop around here is an ok deal, but i found that on google in 2 secs - so look around. Photo quality paper has come down in price a lot but its still not cheap either. Why do i need photo paper? Try here for photo paper at £12.99 for 100 sheets.

Thanks for that. I have been buying my ink cartridges from this Ink and Stuff for a while - they are really cheap. I tend to buy any old cartidges as far as black is concerned but I buy proper Epsom ones for colour.

Re: Printer recommendation wanted

I have a Hewlett Packard, Proffesional series, Deskjet 970Cxi and I'm very happy with the quality of photo prints it produces but 1 very important factor, is the quality of the paper you use and I think that applies to all printers!

Re: Printer recommendation wanted

A year on in this thread, has anyone got any more recommendations?
My Epson C40+ printer has just died. (Or at least it is coming up with an error "Parts inside your printer need replacing") as ever, this is at a most inconvenient time, and I have no doubt that getting a repair is bound to be as expensive as a new printer, it's only 3 years old, and rarely used, so I'm not at all impressed.

So if anyone has experience of getting a printer repaired, I'd be grateful for advice, or should I just dump it (including 2 brand new ink cartridges ) and buy something else?

Greg

What sort of printing do you do?

the HP HP Color laserjet 2840 colour laser printer/copier/fax (proper job, not a fall-apart plastic one) that I've read good reviews of, at about £630, might be fun.

Alternatively I've had for three years a Epson 1290 colour inkjet with a continuous ink feed system from Lyson (you buy the ink by the litre rather than piddly little cartridges). I can certainly recommend the ink system if you do a lot of printing, but it's available for a whole range of printers.
http://www.lyson.com/cis.html. The paper feed on the printer is a bit creaky, but once it gets going, it's ok.

I've had printers repaired in the distant past when a new b/w laser printer cost £1500+, but I'd be more inclined to look at a new one.

Thanks for that, but I think you may have missed the "and rarely used" bit! I use it for documents occasionally, mostly B&W, and photos very rarely. I think the last time the colour cartridge was used was about 2 months ago.
So I'm looking at the circa £50 inkjet market, a £1500 laser would be nice, but pretty pointless. And yes, cartridges are expensive, but if they're lasting more than 6 months, it's not that crucial.

Re: Printer recommendation wanted

As I've said to Sheepman I do confess I am the Queen of Procrastination

However - on Monday I did get round to buying myself a new printer

It is an HP P325

It only prints 6x4 size photos but it prints them without a border and takes any sort of memory card. If you have a camera phone which has bluetooth you can print directly from that too.
As for quality, I found out about this printer as my friend has one and I couldn't believe the quality of the photos she had printed off it.

and . . . . if you run down to your local Tesco (where I just bought mine from) they have reduced them from £124 to £64!
