I know it's defeatist but I think I'll just carry on with the start menu access until that gives up the ghost.Then I'll just eat more chocolate.

You can replace your desktop shortcut. Right click on the start menu shortcut and drag it onto the desktop. When you release you will be given options. Choose "Copy".
