AOL V Norton Fire wall security problem

Ok

Ive use broadband AOL for over a year without a problem

The other day when trying to connect just before it did a message like the following came up

"AOL is unable to connect due to Norton Firewall proctection"

Dont know exact words and i checked all through my Norton security which still 'allowed' AOL and many other sites access etc etc

After just about to give up, id tried to disable fire wall but although it said 'disabled' it still wouldnt connect

Finally I disabled the 'security' tab and that let me get on line. so basically no security protection when i get on line

I enable it as soon as i got on line but it seem now i can only get on line if i disable it first ? Hardly ideal and i assume what a virus would want ?

I did a full Norton scan and found nothing ?

Any solutions ? why this is happening

Trying to do everything with ONE product makes it a nightmare for troubleshooting issues like this, but as you have noticed the inbuilt Norton firewall is blocking your AOL connection.
My advice would be to completely disable the Norton firewall and ONLY use the Anti virus part of the product.
XP comes with an inbuilt firewall that will stop most issues.

The problem you are having is with the proxy server that is within Norton, normally for connection to the live update server. This is blocking your connetion to the AOL servers as it confusing your machine. Hence when you turn Norton off you can connect with AOL.
HERE (http://www.symantec.com/techsupp/files/lu/lu.html) is a patch for the live update service that MAY resolve your connection issue.

You may have to manually setup the AOL proxy server information within your browser. Here (http://webmaster.info.aol.com/proxyinfo.html) is a list of proxy's used by AOL.
As you haven't mentioned which browser you are using I can only give advice for IE as I'm not familiar with AOL's browser.
Go to Tools > Internet OPtions > Connections Tab > LAN settings Button > Proxy information goes in the bottom box. Click OK and restart IE.

Hope this helps.

Thanks for the advise

Im not sure why it would happen now but a risk threat did pop up a few times when i tried to connect before

what i dont understand is in my firewall it seems to be allowing AOL excess

If turning it off doesnt leave me over exposed ill do that. Im due to pay for a upgrade in May 2006 is that worth it ?
