Excessive perspiration.. Is there a cure ???

Dear Forum I have just returned from Southport with the biggest bag of sweaty clothing.

I am cursed with an ability to start sweating profusely when I even start thinking about dancing.

Southport was a 49 shirt, 9 pair of trousers, 15 pair of socks event not to mention boxer shorts!!!!

My question to the forum is this ..... Is there a medical cure for excessive perspiring?

I am slightly more overweight at the moment than I have previously been but I have sweated just as much at 17 stone as I do now at 19 stone.

I started feeling a bit depressed at Southport with all the moisture I was causing and the fact that I had to miss 48 tracks of dancing whilst I walked to a quiet place to change my sweaty shirt for a dry one.

So over to you the FORUM...... please pour forth your masses of knowledge and cure my dampness!

Re: Excessive perspiration.. Is there a cure ???

You could try a glass or two of wine. Alcohol leads to vasodilation, so you'll end up losing more heat by radiation, and thus have less heat to lose by sweating. Also, after a few glasses you won't care any more.

Fat is an insulator, and carrying it around takes energy, so getting your weight into the "normal" range should in theory help. I'd expect it to take about three months for your body to "acclimatise" to a different weight, so you may not see immediate results from weight change (positive or negative).
Another insulator is hair and body hair.

You could also look at clothing that maximises the "chimney effect", whereby cool air is drawn in lower down, heats up and rises, and exits further up - so, loose-fitting clothing. Also, wear less clothes, and wear thinner clothes. Thick cotton boxer shorts may not be ideal.

It's possible to have sweat glands removed, but my understanding is this is normally done in a targetted manner: people have underarm sweat glands removed, so that they sweat less there, and more in other places. However, I'm not a doctor, nor do I play one on tv.

I like the way you tell us this after you removed my appendix.

I don't think there is a great deal that can be done. I sweat alot.

All you can do is take a towel, drink loads of water, take loads of tops, stop dancing.

I think this kind of thing might train the body to sweat more. Because its sweat is being wiped off instead of evaporating, the body won't be cooling down properly. The body's not clever, so its likely solution is more sweat.

There is a cure actually - botox injections in the sweat glands, see Excessive Sweating or Hyperhidrosis underarm treatments and No sweat - just take a Botox jab - Science, News - The Independent

Re: Excessive perspiration.. Is there a cure ???

My back sweats a lot but I 'have' found a cure that works 100% for me...

Its called Driclor.

You can buy it in Boots the Chemist but its literally a third of the price on the net.

I start using it about 5 days before a weekender. And I have a nice dry back all weekend.

The down sides are, it can make you itch, when its first applied. You have to make sure you apply it when your NOT about to get sweaty, as this makes the itching worse.

Simply apply it at bed time and shower it off in the morning and thats it!

Driclor

Re: Excessive perspiration.. Is there a cure ???

It's brave of you to mention this, so well done for bringing it up. All men sweat huge amounts when they dance, especially at weekenders where the heat is generally worse, and I bet there are a lot of women out there who wish more men would take care of themselves and address the problem as often as you do! One thing to remember is that dancing gets you fitter and the fitter you get, the better your body becomes at regulating itself. Unfortunately what this means is that you will sweat more, but as Martin says, losing weight will help with this as your body will have less work to do.

As far as dancing is concerned, just use lot of deoderant and have those spare shirts available. Woman will appreciate it and that can only be a good thing...

Re: Excessive perspiration.. Is there a cure ???

its not just men its women as well - some women. I actually dont sweat on my body at all, its my head that sweats. It actually drips from my hair, down my back and cleavage and therefore makes all my tops wet.

Aside from shaving my hair off, i dont really know what to do with it except i nip to the toilets a lot just like you do underpar and dry off under the dryer. Short hair has helped but my head sweats regardless of my weight.

Its a drag but nobody seems to complain.

I danced with you at a sweaty stage and it just adds to the excitement as far as im concerned. xxx

Hi,
I don't know how tall you are.
A body mass index (BMI) of 25 equates to 6foot 9inch and 17stone.

I suspect you are seriously overweight.

Hauling around less mass will require less energy and result in the need to dissipate less heat.
Less weight will allow the heat to escape more easily. You gain twice over.

Do a lot more dancing to the medium and faster music and give up the blues.

From memory I think tall Paul is about 6 foot 8 or very similar.

Not someone you would wish to insult too often my lovely.

Re: Excessive perspiration.. Is there a cure ???

I hate the fact that we all worry about this, as if sweating is some kind of embarrassing or shameful problem, when actually it's a completely normal part of healthy body function.

It's even worse for women - in addition to the practical inconvenience that Under Par has highlighted, there's also added embarrassment that sweating is seen as 'unfeminine' in some way.

I think if you are someone who sweats more than average (and by definition that's half of all dancers!) then you just have to accept the 'faff' which comes with that, like towelling down, taking breaks, changing shirts etc.

On the positive side, the first dance after a man has changed his shirt is always nice (like opening a fresh packet of biscuits). Plus I enjoy seeing an array of nice shirts appearing as the evening goes on.

As for a 'cure' though, I guess losing excess weight is always good advice but I find it really sad that some people resort to botox injections or surgery to 'treat' this non-condition.
