Moves that are harder in a class

Is it just me, or is a return difficult in a class. I always feel that the ladies have to work really hard to keep it in place. Whenever you see anyone doing it in freestyle, it always travels.

I always find doing a pretzel hard in a class. Cos you have to go through it so slowly, and I just can't do the move like that. It's much easier where you just flow through it in freestyle....

Can't say I have noticed that... I try to teach a distinctive lead between the return and the travelling return, so maybe that helps.
A lot of women have difficulties turning (or spinning) on the spot though, and this is something I end up spending a lot of time at Beginners workshops (and the occasional class when I notice many people struggling).

The basic rules I tend to dish out are:

1- the man is always right! (even when he is wrong, he is right to be wrong, indeed he is creative!)

2- As a result of rule 1, men are responsible for everything that happens on the dance floor, no use blaming your partner guys.

3- All turns / spins should happen on the spot. If you want to end up somewhere different from where you started, travel first (ie take a step or 2) and then spin / turn.

There are more rules / pearls of wisdom, but those are the most common ones!

There are many moves that somehow we manage to do without thinking, but slow it down and they become impossible... Just like teaching a double Pretzel into a reversed Pretzel
Even the Octopus can be a nightmare...

Maybe dancing in slow motion should be added to the list of tips that DavidB posted last week!

Catapault. I always go off balance when doing a catapult in class.... I find it a very hard move to do slowly.

I don't have too much problems with returns, it's all the other bits that I find confusing !!
I do however find that some bits of moves work better traveling. And on some moves I have to move 'out of position' {reletive to the rest of the class} in order to be in the correct place to catch the lady for the next bit, but I think that most of the time it's because the lady is traveling on the turn.
I definetly agree that most moves are a lot harder to do when broken down and done slowly. Even done slowly in a class I still catch with the wrong hand.

BTW does anyone actually 'Lean' in freestyle when doing the Cattapult ?

Shhh..don't tell anyone, but I usually use that 'lean' beat to catch up with my partner's hand. I must step back too far or something...err..but that's the man's fault, right?
