A Range of Styles

Just wondering how many MJ'ers can actually dance a whole range of dance styles?

(Other than the usual L&B, Lindy or Salsa even though I've included them)

If you can do MJ, you can do merengue... do all of your MJ moves, but do them slowly and wiggle your a*se
only problem is figuring out when it is a merengue track playing

Ok well i've done a bit of Salsa, Samba, Hip Hop, West Coast Swing, Linedancing, Tap dancing, Scottish Dancing, Waltz, Swing, Rumba, foxtrot, cha cha cha, Jive. Phew!! and a lot more to learn yet!!!

It's great doing different styles because then at least on a freestyle night when they play different types of music you can make your dancing look different everytime!! It's GREEEEAAAT!!!!!

Re: A Range of Styles

I've done a bit of salsa (NY style - about 6 months) and a bit of merengue was sometimes thrown in at the lessons. I do a bit of basic bachata when it is played as the basic move is easy to pick up.

I've been to a few celidhs. Does that count as Scottish dancing I particularly liked the helicopter move, but I don't think I will be trying that on an MJ dance floor.

Also is there an award for worst poll at the BFG?

I'm sure most of us have done "a bit of" various things, what with taster classes, and so forth. It sounds like you're talking about what dances we can dance competently?

Ok well I've done a bit of Ballroom, Latin, Salsa, Merengue, Modern (stage type dancing), scottish dancing, Jazz, disco and even had a go at moris dancing! (though girls aren't really supposed to do that!) I've also done the taster classes in hiphop, funky, lindy, a bit of tap and have recently stared westcoast swing and all that but I've generally found people from other dance backgrounds where the dance was structured, have found it difficult to lose all that for MJ but those who start with MJ have found it easier to adapt to other dances, anyone else found this the case?!

I personally love being abole to attempt at least to bring some of these other styles to my MJ but deffinately view it as learning various languages, after you've done a few it is easier to pick up others as there are a lot of similarities, it just takes a while to see them sometimes!

Does tat make any sense or have I strayed miles from the question?!

LOL

Re: A Range of Styles

I've done various taster classes and I know I would like to do learn more of some of these styles.

WCS - done 2 taster classes, very much enjoyed it, attempted following in freestyle for a couple of dances last month. (Attempted being the key word here).

Arg Tango - done about 3 or 4 classes in this over the past year, hope to make some effort to work on this a bit, might have a willing accomplice to practice with... Many years before I could follow properly for a social dance at this rate.

Lindy - am making some small progress as going to a weekly practice group - as much for the social side and to encourage those organising it. I just don't think its suits my personal style though. Could maybe manage to follow for a track or two.

Salsa - I did this for about 6 months, but few decent local social venues to make it worth continuing classes IMO. (Plenty of venues, but often smoky, sticky floors, overcrowded etc so never enjoy myself). Can follow, sort of. Same for Merengue.

Ballroom - you need a regular partner to go along to classes in Belfast. Something I will probably learn at some stage in life... I could manage to follow some very basic steps in waltz, cha cha etc.

Have considered bellydancing and ballet but they always seem to clash with other things.
