Tango weekends and events

I thought I would start a thread where we could put details of any weekend or other special events (if that's OK moderators?), for information and for possible LTFG meetings.

I know there was some talk of a weekend to Dublin so I'll start with details of a Dublin event in September (I know its the weekend before Sep Southport...). No more details about workshops etc as yet, but its something to think about. (You can get good weekend hotel deals in Dublin, I can look into that if anyone is interested.)

Perhaps we could have details of the Tango Mango as well Jon? And anything else?

Re: Tango weekends and events

Tango events in Edinburgh this April;

http://www.edinburghtango.org.uk/tango/tangomain.php

I am heading to the Milogna on the Saturday night @ DanceBase on the 22nd.

Missing the Brunch on the 15th heading to the Beach Ballroom in Aberdeen, looking forward to that next weekend. Missing the one on the 29th due to being in Amsterdam for the Queens Day. Still unable to find an Tango event to go to during my visit there. However there is plenty going on during the Queens Day weekend....

Further on in June missing the summer ball, which was excellent last year, due to Southport, which is unmissable.

It will be some consolation though that there will be a small milonga at Southport in June. (Really looking forward to that.)

Re: Tango weekends and events

Look carefully and London is like that most weekends! There are 2+ classes with practica most evenings and the Welsh Centre fridays, spoiled for choice sats and the Factory on Sun eves. Private lessons (individually or in groups) with Jill Barrett or Christine Denniston particularly advised. Pick your weekend and there is Tango al Fresco Sunday afternoon and prob a late milonga (and I mean Late) fri or Sat. Oh and there's HipstersJive too!

Yeah, yeah, go on, rub it in....

Actually I believe Dublin has some sort of Saturday workshops most weekends over the summer and there is a class and practica most evenings through the week all year.

I know its on the same island but it can cost me almost as much to go down to Dublin for the weekend as across to London and in London I can also do MJ.

Re: Tango weekends and events

The next Tango Mango is 8th to 13th August. It's a lovely, relaxed atmosphere and a great opportunity to just dance for hours and hours. Unfortunately I normally only get down for a couple of evenings and the weekend but I really enjoy it. If you are down during the week and need a MJ fix then Nelson Rose teaches in Torquay on Wednesdays (relatively new class so not many experienced dancers) and in Exeter on Thursdays (200 - 250 people and some really good dancers).

Steve and Debbir Morrall run Tango Tangk near Southampton periodically. I've never been but I have heard good things about them - the next one is over Easter so probably too soon for most people. Julie and I are planning on going to the milonga on Saturday night. They are also doing a Tango Toolkit for beginners on 17th/18th June which might be fun.

I guess you've looked at Torito. If there's nothing else, then a visit to El Corte's "Orange Ball" would be worth a couple of hours on the train. I love El Corte - Eric is a wonderful person, his team are great and the dancing is awesome! They do all sorts of events through the year but you have to book early for most. (If you go then try and get tickets for the New Year Party - you can only buy them from Eric). Eric is teaching in London on 23rd June but I can't find a website to link - it's a 5 hour workshop on colgadas and volcadas for "higher intermediate / advanced dancers" (Lord help me - if we get tickets I'll probably be way out of my depth).

Re: Tango weekends and events

I have JonD, thanks. Last year I came across a few street demos however that was more luck on my part. I may just find a Milonga on the day(packing my shoes in case).

Eric was in Edinburgh 2 months ago, I missed him due to other commitments. I have heard so much about him since and his house in the Netherlands, wont miss him a second time.

Details, we need details. Can you make any of these weekends Lynn?

http://www.tangoalfresco.com/

We are pleased to announce the dates for Tango Al Fresco 2006. The three events will be held on the following Sundays: July 23rd, July 30th, and August 13th. Yes, there will be two weekends in a row, followed by a weekend off, followed by the final weekend. This schedule is due to the first event of Tango Al Fresco being included in The Big Dance, a new programme of week-long city-wide activities promoting participation in dance. PLEASE NOTE: Sunday July 23rd will be held in a different location: the Broadwalk, Queen Mary Gardens, Inner Circle, Regent's Park. All other events will take place in the usual location: the Broadwalk, Avenue Gardens, Outer Circle, Regent's Park.

Re: Tango weekends and events

Hmm..currently... July 23rd I'm busy (with a conference I volunteer at) but I have some recollection that the following weekend is the Gotan concert on the Sat? That would make a nice weekend combination, concert Sat, tango on Sun (though concert tickets prob all gone by now ). The August date would prob also suit.

I must keep my diary up-to-date. Both CeeCee and I are going to the Gotan concert. So it is a bit of a splurge money-wise but as you say you could make a weekend of it.

Only one way to find out if tickets left.

*Goes off to look for where the Gotan Project Concert was mentioned*

I feel I can justify a trip more if I have more than one reason for going.

Essential link. I don't know if this link is the cheapest way of buying tickets, but at least it should allow you to search around.

Thanks. Tickets available - stalls - not sure if this is seated in numbered rows? (I don't know the venue) Clive or Cee Cee when you got your tickets were they numbered seats?

(Flights available too - from as little as £38 if I fly to Stanstead, though other travel costs might make Luton as cheap an option...)

Re: Tango weekends and events

Tango Siempre played today in a totally packed foyer of the Queen Elizabeth Hall at lunchtime. They were brilliant musicians who brought out many tango couples onto the floor including LatinLover and Mrs LatinLover (so lovely to see them!) and Simon Selmon. The good news is also that they are playing at Landmark Arts Centre, Teddington, on Saturday April 29 with some other musicians - see blurb below. I'm up for going - anyone else?

Tangents - New Directions in Tango is a radical new collaboration between the acclaimed tango ensemble Tango Siempre and some of Europe’s most innovative creative musicians.

Tango Siempre will be joined by virtuoso saxophonist Gilad Atzmon and outstanding drummer/remixer Steve Argüelles in a powerful and ground-breaking fusion of tango, jazz and live electronics. The programme will include music inspired by traditional and nuevo tango, plus specially commissioned new works by Will Gregory (of Goldfrapp), Gilad Atzmon, Steve Argüelles and Tango Siempre.

Inspired by tango, jazz and contemporary music, Tango Siempre have developed their own unique and eclectic style of tango. Since their formation in 1998 they have toured extensively in the UK and Europe, collaborated with internationally renowned artists including the London Mozart Players, bandoneonist Victor Villena (of Gotan Project) and Arte Latino Cultural Project, and commissioned new music by composers as diverse as Huw Warren, Pablo Ziegler and Will Gregory.

Tango is something I love doing at the Camber or other weekenders

Probably would want to go with some support to try out a regular class

Any around 30 miles of Watford

I'd be up for that - would be interesting seeing Jango taught at a tango venue rather than an MJ venue - but not on my own. Who else?
