West Coast Jive

Can someone clarify what this is ?

We have West Coast Swing and Jive which are separate entities now coming together

WCS has foot work which looks very complicated

Will West Coast Jive have less footwork ?

What happen to East Coast Swing ? We could have had East Coast Jive and miss out the Midlands ?

I guess this was inevitable but Im surprised at how quickly it has come about.

Is there any more detail on this i.e. who is teaching it, exactly what bits of WCS are they merging with Jive and so on?

Re: West Coast Jive

was it inevitable that someone would try and "dumb down" WCS for those who lack the ability to move their feet in any regular pattern ? or is it purely a money spinning exercise ; make something sound easier to get more people to go ? or is there some altruistic reason, perhaps an easier journey toward "proper" dance ?

There is a e-mail from ceroc london re a workshop. seems to be just a workshop at present

Simon and Nicole 23rd September

It says

Combing the style and flair of west coast swing with the freedom of modern jive

Says more but I cant cut and paste it

Would make sense if ceroc developed its own brand ??

My question was re the foot work

Heaven forbid I may just go and find out !

Would have gone out to everyone on ceroc londons mailing list I guess ?

There really nice pics of the lovely couple

More info here:
Specialist

It looks like it's another name for "Coasters", which has been taught at Ceroc Enterprises weekenders a few times now.

From a description on uk-jive of Coasters: "WCS influenced moves and styling without the complicated footwork."
Or from the West Coast Jive flyer: "the style and flair of West Coast Swing with the freedom of Modern Jive".

Is this different from the 'coasters' workshops they (Simon and Nicole) sometimes teach, like they did at Blaze? That was simply teaching moves coming from WCS, in an MJ environment. Nothing unusual there, as MJ (like most dances) has always been influenced by and integrated moves from many dances (jive, salsa, chacha, etc).

Or are we talking about the creation of a new dance form all together? If so, it would definately be interesting to know about it, what are the rules, what does it look like etc.

then it's simply WCS moves adapted to fit MJ, what's the fuss about ? why would that be considered as 'ceroc developping its own brand?' (I may be wrong but I understood the end of this sentence to be 'of wcs' btw)

Variations of MJ based on other dances have existed for a very long time I understand, like blues, cuban blues, latin jive, etc I'm sure there are plenty of others... The only one who seem to have taken it a bit further seems to be Amir (although, being somewhat relatively new compared to dance dinausaurs I wouldn't be surprised if there have been others I haven't heard about) with Jango and weekly classes. Is it still MJ ? I'd say yes, but with more lead and follow technique than what is usually found within the regular MJ beginner / intermediate classes. Can only be a good thing AFAIC, as long as nobody tries to lure people who dance Jango into thinking that they are doing tango, and the same for WC Jive and WCS.

there is no fuss - Stewart38 just empties his head onto the forum now and again....

...wouldn't catch me doing that.

I still don't know what he was on about with the "how many ceroc champs have you won" comment

I did overhear a couple of dancers at a Ceroc weekender discussing the Coasters class they'd just done and referring to what they had learnt as "West Coast Swing", so it seems that at least some people get confused in this regard. I can't recall who the teachers were.

I think the use of the name 'West Coast' is simply to get people to visualise a smooth, funky slotted style.

And of course because West Coast seems to be a bit of a buzz word at the mo and people want to be able to dance like J&T without learning foot patterns.

Well that's different then. While I'm pretty sure that no teacher doing Coaster or WC Jive would argue they are teaching WCS, I agree that
