Rep Power: 3 Rep.: 1256 ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | Recovering from injury OK folks - how long should it take to recover from a sprained ankle? Fell down the stairs at Beo's on Sunday night on the way out to the chill out night, so instead had to spend the night at home chilling out my ankle ![]() I was supposed to be doing a beginners tango workshop on Saturday (which I'm now putting off) and a dips and drops workshop on Sunday. Am currently at home RICEing* my ankle for all I'm worth (having had to travel back yesterday to London from Aberdeen - not an easy thing to do ).What are the odds that I'll be able to do the workshop on Sunday? Or should I just cancel it (again - was injured for the last one too, but that was my back), get most of my money back and admit that it just ain't going to happen? ![]() * Rest, Ice, Compression and Elevation for you non-first aiders out there...

My advice would be don't do it, but you've got to think about whether doing the workshop is more important to you than healing quickly or not.

Rep Power: 2 Rep.: 94 | Re: Recovering from injury I'd say it also depends on which ankle you've hurt. For most dips and drops you support yourself on your right leg, therefore that will bear most of the strain. So probably not such a good idea if you've hurt your right ankle. On the other hand, your left leg would take far less strain. Ibuprofen is good for helping to relieve inflammation, but it can affect some peoples' stomachs, so best to take it with food if you're not sure whether that affects you. Hope you're feeling better soon... ![]() |

Rep Power: 3 Rep.: 655 ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | Re: Recovering from injury Number of factors come into play – the main one being how badly it was sprained I sprained my ankle last June – was back dancing with light strapping 4 days later – having hobbled round Florence and returned to London. RICE is good – but as Simon mentioned heat is of benefit as well – the reason for this is that when you sprain your ankle fluid accumulates there and if you only ice it the fluid will become thicker and stay around the ankle longer – to assist with the moving on of this fluid – gentle movement is recommended as well – gentle rolling of the ankle when warmed, and walking being the easiest way to start this – later on massage works well. Arnica is also good in promoting healing – apply as a cream – the rubbing in helps move that accumulated fluid about, can also be of benefit in taking in tablet form as well. As to the workshop on Sunday – if you are able to walk now with min discomfort then there is a chance but really the best thing you can do is listen to your body and make your decision based on what it is telling you. Hope you feel better soon ![]()

Will be able to use the heat/cold thing 48 hours after the injury (so later tonight) - checked that suggestion out earlier. Presumably so that all the swelling has taken place before you apply the heat. Have decided reluctantly to cancel the workshop Ankle is still really swollen, so it's clearly going to take a few days to go down properly. And it is my right ankle too. ![]() Have Storm in about 3 weeks, so need to be fit for that, so not going to take the risk.
