The Clothes Experiment

Expansion on the dressing down thread..

I have found I dance alot better in some clothes than I do in others. I prefer long jeans and tight t-shirts or shirts.

Going out tonight to a local freestyle and going to do bit of an experiment. Going to wear a £300 white ted Baker suit for the first part and change in to normal dance clothes part way through to see if my dancing becomes better (also going out dancing at nightclubs after so dont fancy wearing suit out).

Will try and get dances with both sets of clothes on and see if it is just a mental thing or whether what we wear does make you dance better.

Re: The Clothes Experiment

I wore a tux to the Ceroc NI 2nd anniversary ball but I had to lose the bow-tie and jacket after about an hour, I was overheating drastically! I didn't dance any better in the suit - normally I wear a loose shirt and plain dark trousers because they're not restrictive, whereas a dress shirt and jacket doesn't let you move as freely. Have worn a T-shirt to class too but it doesn't really make a difference. It's probably a combination of mental (feeling good about the way you look = more confidence) and physical (the right clothes, energy levels etc) freedom leading to better dancing rather than just one thing.

Re: The Clothes Experiment

Lee, you might find that what you feel comfortable in is due to what you feel familiar with - to dance in or otherwise. If this white suit is a huge departure for you, chances are it will feel odd, and you'll feel uncomfortable. If you want to smarten up, do it gradually. Or just wear this suit a lot and get used to it!

Hope to see you wearing it sometime

Re: The Clothes Experiment

I tend to dance better in trousers I have found. Jeans usually restrict my movement. Also I find shirts better than t-shirts as it makes me feel less lazy. But sometimes a want a relaxed lazy night so dress down.

Re: The Clothes Experiment

I always prefer a man to be wearing trousers when I dance with him, I was extremely distracted by a chap in very small shorts a while ago.

Re: The Clothes Experiment

Twirly's right. It's like heels. If you're not used to dancing in them, they'll hinder your dancing. But if you add them bit by bit until your used to them, you'll be fine. I dance better in jeans and a top that leaves my mid-drift bare. I don't overheat, I don't feel under-dressed and I can move how I want. But when I wear a dress at parties, I feel inhibited - like my dancing style has to change to fit.

A normal suit jacket isn't going to work well for dancing Modern Jive - everything rides up when you raise your arms significantly. I'm not sure even a proper tailsuit will really work with the range of movement in MJ.

Re: The Clothes Experiment

an off night anyhow in both sets of clothes. The venue was so dark (black floor, black walls hardly any decent lighting) that it didn't really matter what I wore.

I think with the suit it makes me feel like I should be swing dancing to a big band wearing two tone shoes, which really isn't my style.

Suit is now going on ebay.

which is why I'd never want to go to a MJ based black tie ball. Suits suit ballroom, and if they're hugely baggy then swing, but not MJ. Actually they're pretty awesome for tango as well.

You can't wear a white suit a lot.
It will be spending too much time in the dry cleaners.

Many clothes have "Dry clean only" on just to cover the manufacturers ass.

I soak a lot of my stuff in cold water and Woolite.

Can't remember when I last used a dry cleaners.

But a white suit would have to go. Tha's why white linen suits are so popular - they can be washed.

Hey I was wondering if Lee looks like Hopkirk (Randall and Hopkirk (deceased) in his white suit or John Lennon on "Abbey Road"

I've never met Lee.

According to David James.

I was thinking of the original Randall and Hopkins TV series. It started in 1969 and Kenneth Cope played Marty Hopkins. Vic Reeves played the role in the 2000 series.
