Picture the scene, two male dancers sitting out the 2nd class in a long, thin venue: both dancers have been dancing for ages - more than 5 years, one of them possibly twice that . Because of the shape of the venue there are two long lines of couples with the stage at one end with teacher and demo. At the other end of the hall the two guys sat out. For a significant part of the lesson those two guys are like Simon Cowel and Piers Morgan in Britain's Got Talent. The demo and teacher get on with the lesson and watch in impotent horror as the "judges" sit there pointing and gesturing towards people doing the lesson and both talking and laughing. Eventually some of the people in the lesson start to feel self-conscious and keep glancing nervously at the, self-appointed, "judges". During the freestyle some of those people in the lesson express their distress to the teacher.Wind the clock forward to the following week. You're back at your regular venue. What should the teacher do? Is there an option that says "nothing, let those guys have their fun?" All hypothetical, of course ![]()

![]() Maybe you could then offer additional benefits for members of the "Rebel Alliance"... say something like membership of a recognised dance body - like the United Kingdom Alliance of Professional Teachers of Dance. You know, all your members could get have Public Liability Insurance through that - that'd be a handy incentive for joining. Ooooh! Ooooh! How about some teacher training and exams - like the CTA? That way, all your members would be recognised as having a high standard of teaching. Another incentive! ![]() Excellent idea. Now what could you call it.....? ![]()

And I happen to know that grease has been very active in sending out his first post by email. Although he must have got someone to correct the spelling and punctuation. Maybe more people will read through the lines and go to this class where you get a lesson without interruption. And, maybe, just maybe, those people who don't want a lesson will stay away until the freestyle ![]() Note to legal wizards on the forum. Let's say there were some factual inaccuracies on the malicious email distributed by grease - after all, he's just quoting someone and wasn't actually there himself. Is there some law that's been broken or action that could be taken? Just asking for a friend ![]()

Rep Power: 5 Rep.: 1848 ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | (I'm not a lawyer) Andy - my first step would be to contact the person involved in (paper) writing, correcting any factual inaccuracies in their email, and requesting that they make a retraction to the same email list, and this forum, or else provide you with a right of reply on their email list. Ideally you both should be able to settle the matter without recourse to lawyers. Quote:

So, grease has done harm by distributing malicious falsehood. And he has got away with it because this teacher will get on with his life and put this behind him. But who is the loser in the long run? The sad thing is that, in situations like this, there are no winners ![]()

Rep Power: 1 Rep.: 79 | Re: Should teachers take their bad modes out on dancers A rich seam of discussion. No doubt that grease's posts deserve the bad rep they have attracted. I see no place for people chatting at the sides or the ends during the lesson - as someone has said if all you want to do is socialise then come after the lessons. Equally in the lines the teacher needs to find ways of controlling the chat, although expecting silence in the lines is hopeful at best and counter-productive at worst. Some social interaction in the lines is good - you do want people to have fun and its not a military parade after all. If the venue concerned had a couple plonkers running their own version of 'Sussex's Got Talent' it needed to be stopped, however, I'd suggest that it might have been better to have addressed this immediately after it happened rather than wait a week. Clearly feelings and attitudes run strong down along the coast.< |
