Venue Letdowns!!!!

I happened to go to the new wednesday night at Marcus Garvey in Nottingham last night. I was immensley dissapointed as the monday nights are always busy i had thought it would be packed on account of it being a new night and free pass e-mails having been sent out. In short it was terrible the music made me feel like i was in a 70's roller disco for all the wrong reasons the intermidiate class was poorly taught very rushed and altogether quite boring. it made me think how long will this night last if even for the very first night there was no real effort put into it!!!

I have also recently felt let down by the monday night on a whole (until Marc came back teaching and assisting with the music) as for a good few months nothing changed every night it would be the same old music while not being bad music it was the same stuff every week. I find this extremly frustrating as it tends to have a negative effect on my night.

Basically what im trying to get to is that i feel "letdown" by the organaisation of the night/nights even though the people there are fantastic there seems to be no enthusiasm to encourage new starters to come. Or to encourage the regulars to keep coming back.

Does anybody else have any qualms about their local venue and if so what have they done about it or do they want doing about it??

M

I have mentioned this on another thread regarding venues, I have stop going to Leics for that reason, same music, regulars have stopped coming etc, I tend to go to freestyles only and have started salsa as I don't like to travel in the week and there is only the one ceroc venue in Leics.

I think this is the third time in the last few years that there has been an attempt to launch a Weds night in Nottingham, and the previous 2 (one of which was at MG) weren't successful - some folk will remember this. Also it didn't seem to have promoted very heavily on Monday nights.

Give it time though - it can take a long while for a new night to get established and build up a regular clientele.

I wasn't there - were there lots of beginners there? That may have influenced the choice of music and level of the class?

Thumbs down Re: Venue Letdowns!!!!

I also have stopped going to Leicester, same music and no interest in keeping the regulars.
What i have done???????????
I have emailed Phil Roberts at Ceroc Central detailing my concerns...............Did i get a reply?????????????No.
I have spoken to the Venue manager voicing my concerns and he did say he would take my views to Ceroc Central..............Has anything improved???????????No.
The last time i went to Leicester there was about 75 begginers in the begginers class. When the begginers went for there refresher class at 9pm there was a total of 11 in the intermediate class. Im not saying i dont like dancing with begginers (we all started there) but when you only have 11 dancers beyond begginer and 4 of those are women it makes a dull night.

Does anyone know why Ceroc do nothing at certain venues to keep regulars there?

I'm not sure if its a ceroc 'thing' or a franchisee 'thing' if you are earning money and have people coming through the door why change it.............

My gripe over recent months has been more specific i.e...........

No gaps between tracks, very unsuitable music (house, garage)

It just seem to be about money and if its coming in....there quite happy to get rid of wingers

Re: Venue Letdowns!!!!

This is not just a ceroc thing. i have stopped dancing at Blitz in Sheffield in the middle of the week because there just doesn't seem to be any effort put in. Same poor music , same level of dancers. This is a shame and I was considering teaching until I found a competition partner who has re-lit my passion to compete.

Do we just expect too much now we have got to a certain level?

I think you've hit the nail on the head. It's been a complaint for a long time, the format for a Ceroc night works well for bringing in new people and teaching them Modern Jive. Once people get to a certain point in their dancing (this will vary from person to person) they get bored and want something more! Unfortunately, alot just give up altogether or go on to a different type of dance. It would be interesting to have some factual evidence as to how many people started Ceroc and how long they stayed with it. The amount of people that have been doing MJ for more than (lets say) 5 years, i imagine, is a very small percentage of the people that are currently doing MJ.

Re: Venue Letdowns!!!!

Disagree cruela. I can go to Northampton (i think you may know the venue) and Emma and others there encourage the regulars to perform/join caberet. I can go to Nottingham and they do the same.
Then you get venues like Lecester - 4 teachers in a year and no interest in the place cos there interest lie with there main venue.

Maybe, but I would imagine the proportion of 5 years+ clientele is growing fast - Ceroc has been around a long time now.

Re: Venue Letdowns!!!!

Maybe i should rephrase that. The ratio between the amount of people that have started MJ since it first opened it's doors and the amount of people that have stuck to it for more than 5 years would be interesting to see.
Is that clearer?

Only been on the MJ scene for 2 years and can only comment on Leicester but it is like im entering a new venue cos there are no faces i know.
Dont know about five years but the people i have spoke to who have stopped in the last two years would be around 20.

Emma is the most committed teacher i know (no offence to any other teachers). This is partly because it is her whole career, not just an add on to her day job, like most teachers. Yes she does have her Troupe, which is fantastic, but it doesn't alter the fact that on an average Ceroc night the amount of long term dancers is small.

I am lucky enough to travel all over the country with work. In the last few weeks I have danced in Bath, Stockport, Wigan and birmingham. all midweek some good some not so good. I take pot luck in the week but do a fair bit of travelling for freestyles. Not as much as I used to when I was living near bedford and could get in to London more often. I miss Ashtons.

I go to different local venues. Even outside London, there's enough choice if you're willing to drive a bit and/or try a range of dance styles.
