You disagree with it being an exclusive human trait then :) I think its a very basic human instinct, maybe the most important one as it helps the species survive.

Unfortunately the main human traits not shared with animals seem to be negative ones i.e deceit, spite, selfishness, slyness...
Many animals do have those traits too. But..why are they all negative ? A deceitful human hunter gatherer could send a rival to where there is no food in order to feed his own family, likewise selfishness can help you and your family survive too, just as slyness keeps all the cards close to your chest as yet another way to help you/your family/your group survive. Spite ; again if its against other groups its perfectly natural even if it is harder to defend.

The quality which is unique to humans. and distinguishes us from animals, is consciousness.

To love, be loved and respect love IMHO
Re: What is the most Human thing we can do?
In the yard at work, I have been watching mum AND dad birds feeding their young ones :awe: that to me shows all the human emotions that have been quoted above. Have to admit it was very touching (and surprising) to see Daddy bird doing his share of looking after the little-uns
AFA "What is the most Human thing we can do?" well, what really sets us apart from animals, is that we cover our modesty and wear clothes
I've got it !!

Good article. In response to Reete Petite I was going to pick up on the bonobo monkey which is similar to humans in its anthropomorphic characterics. If you have a look on Wikipedia, Frans de Waal (quoted as one one of the world's leading primatologists) and refers to the Bonobo as being capable of altruism, compassion, empathy, kindness, patience and sensitivity.
With regards to signlanguage the ape learnt a vocabularly of 400... which is pretty good when you realise that the average human has a daily vocabularly of approximately 1200-1500 words.
