I know, me is just messin' wiv ya. It's DJ's fault for giving me a reputation to live down to.

With that out of the way, let me say that there's been several vacancies over the past few months around Glasgow, and out of the current dozen or so taxi dancers, I think only four are male.
really? Other way round where I am - 3 women and about 8 men. For cultural reasons, beginner women seem more likely to be OK with a female lead than men would be with a male follower, so from that point of view, female taxis are more versatile. In that female taxis can lead and follow, I can't comment on versatility in any other arena.

That sort of makes sense - on the Ceroc theory that leaders need more help than followers at the start, and also because lots of women taxi dancers can and do lead as well as follow, whereas fewer male dancers can / do switch.

EDIT: hell, LMC's faster on the trigger-finger - my time will come. But, what she said, basically.

I'm about to give up taxi-ing for the 2nd time!!

My main gripe is the (left) shoulder thing. [My Health and Safety gripe] I simply wonder how many ex-taxis will be riddled with left shoulder arthritis in 15 years time!

On a personal note, I just want to get back to more better dancing for a bit!

Yes, which is one little gripe I have is when female taxi dancers stand in as a man in the class, or the review class! The leaders need more help, not being able to go through the moves with a female taxi really doesn't help. We're there to help the beginners, not bump up the numbers! I never stand in as a man, I always do the followers part, then, when I'm in the queue, I will take the leader's part with one of the other ladies waiting.

I think it was just a bit of a wind up. He told me if ever I wanted to be a taxi dancer, just to let him know...

    I don't need the freebies.

I wouldn't getting to see what these taxi dancers talk about on their own forum though....

Why do I keep missing out in sentences? (OK, it was deliberate that time, but I still managed to accidentally miss the "do"! Only noticed when I went back to decide what word to miss out! )

Anyway, I meant to write "I wouldn't mind getting ...", in case it wasn't obvious...

I agree though, it would be interesting to see what they complain, I mean talk about

Any taxi's open to being bribed with chocolate?

    Take care,

Me too! I just gave up taxiing a couple of months ago, but for me it was the bad back that stopped me. Being yanked around by beginners just didn't help my back, so I decided it was time to stop again.

I also enjoy just dancing for my own sake, and actually find my dancing is better when I'm not a taxi....

Careful LM, that's the path to heresy you know.

Next thing you know, you'll be saying that teachers aren't always dance gods, and before you even know it, you'll be saying that competing doesn't always make you a better social dancer.

    BURN HER!

Well I am taxi manager for two venues and absolutely love doing it
There is nothing like the feeling of seeing someone who came in as an absolute beginner with no confidence go up to a better dancer and ask them to dance then dance with some confidence and a great big smile on their face.
Who cares if they are great dancers or not they are enjoying themselves which is all that matters

As a taxi we are there to make the beginners life easier not teach them to dance (maybe help them on their way) and if you can make someone happy thats your payment

I couldn't have said it better!

I am a Taxi and I find that the biggest kick I get (apart from stray spare legs on spins ) is seeing people enjoy themselves and gain confidence.

Dance can be life changing, and, in my experience, usually for the better.

    Been there. Done that, quit.

Now I've (almost) quit lesson nights for good. Well I've almost quit compared to what I used to do.

Re: Would you be a taxi dancer?

I used to be a Taxi but fell out with management (a regular occurance in my francise!) but I still love to help out beginners
I miss the free admission but don't think I could do it again, it's too restrictive, and I think I've picked up too many bad habits anyway

Re: Would you be a taxi dancer?

Isn't it strange how time changes you? When this thread was started in 2005 I voted "No way!" but now I've had to change that to "I'm already a taxi dancer and am happy with the system ."

I love doing the job, and I was asked to do it just at the right time, when I was starting to get a bit bored with my dancing. It gave me a new focus and energised me again. I was able to enjoy dancing again.
